DCM Database

A friend and myself are creating a database that we hope will help potential buyers, breeders and maybe one day scientific research as well. We started this about a month ago and we're already at over 1800 names. If you have a registered dobe that's diagnosed with DCM or has died from DCM will you please post their registered name or private message me? The more names we have the better. If you know of someone on here that has had a dobe pass from DCM would you please reach out to them? Older pedigrees are just as important as newer ones.

If your registered dog isn't in dobequest could you please send DOB, DOD, official cause of death, and sire and dam's registered name, if you have the sire and dam of the sire and dam that would be helpful as well.

I tried to upload the file but it won't accept excel and the PDF was far larger than the allowed amount. If you would like to see it please PM me your email address and I can email it to you. If some knows a way for it to be loaded I can email it to you.

If you are in the Dobermann DCM, Doberman Health and stats, or Doberman owners group you may have already given my your information, my name is Karen Miller.

Thanks for your help!

Just wanted to say thank you to all of those who have sent me info. Please reach out to others that you know has a dobe with DCM or lost a dobe. I personally think if we all start being honest and stop hiding this awful disease more can be gained.

I already keep my dogs dobequest data base up to date. I've not lost a dog to DCM yet, but have had 2 older dogs die of sudden death with normal Echo's - no heart enlargement. Every time I do heart testing, it is added. I like how dobequest now allows for addition tests without removing prior tests.

Wish more people would make use of this - as a DPCA member, I am always willing to add information to an existing dobequest account - as long as you are listed as the breeder or owner of the dog.

I agree I wish breeders would update more often. I happy with the set up of dobequest and we have added quite a few dogs by searching cause of death so I'm pretty happy with that. I just wish more people would update it.

Why not just encourage people to use the database that already exists - Dobequest - instead of creating yet another, separate place for people to look? I'd much rather see people use the really well designed, "one stop shop" place we have for all the health information, where you can see complete statistics on dogs, instead of going to multiple places for multiple pieces of information.

That is a great question Meadowcat. Not all of the dogs in our database are in dobequest. Many people have Euro bred dobes or byb dobes that aren't in dobequest but their information is just a critical to those that are. I def. do encourage anyone who is a DPCA member to keep their dog's information as up-to-date as possible. It really does help everyone and it's one of the places that we pull information, as well. Instead of having a database for dobequest, Euro dogs, Euro AM dogs... We are just trying to have one and it's soul purpose is DCM.

I guess a good question would be, what are the limitations for putting dogs in Dobequest? I know you have to be a DPCA member (although I know a lot of people who ask members to enter information for them). I have seen some Euro dogs in there, I think?

Interesting topic.

I'm a member but I confess I have lost my login to dobequest. I suppose once I'm desperate I'll reach out to them. I guess a part of me feels like breeders and owners should add and change things. I don't feel real comfortable adding someone else's dog. The info. that is given to me is given to me from owners and databases. If someone tries to offer up someone else's dog I ask them if they can back it up. I really wish there was just ONE database for all the Dobermans in the world it would make everyone's life so much easier as far as tracking things like this.

I do think that this DCM sheet is an easy way to reference certain lines and pedigrees.Wwe currently have 2 generations but I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up going to 4 generations.

There's also the pedigree database (pedigreedatabase.com). There are plenty of opportunities to enter relevant data, anyone can create dog profiles, but they do have means of protecting entries and correcting sabotage/inaccurate information. The most important features are that it's readily available to the public, but also has a very low barrier to entry in terms of adding pedigree information, no need to be a member of a specific breed club or beg someone to update info for you. Good luck finding any DPCA member who would take the time to enter data in Dobequest for a dog who's breeding they consider to be inferior, but that's excluding a large part of the population and providing very skewed tunnelvision into health issues, where a big picture is a necessity.

I agree one database would be nice but I see where some dogs could be missed. Am I crazy to want to see a more advanced database? Meaning I would like to see others factors to see if a better correlation could be made as to why some dogs are effected but don't develop DCM. For example, I'm wondering do any of these influence that gene " turning on"?: allergies, thyroid, spay/neuter? At what age? Diet?... anything. This disease scares me and what it means for the future of this breed
