My girl...3 1/2 year old red female, spayed.. has been acting weird. We picked her up from DRU the day before easter and occasionally has acted jumpy about her hind quarters. The best I can describe it.. is that its like she gets stung by a bee, she jumps and runs and licks her butt/hind quarters. It makes her afraid and nervous. It was maybe every couple of weeks but happening more the last couple of days.any ideas?
Thank you for your advice
Justin
could be anal problems, have you noticed any foul smell near her 'rear end'?
also...I had a 4 year old dobe girl years ago who used to 'act like she was stung' occasionally, turned out she was having some problems with her discs in her lower back, spondylosis . just a thought.
I'll agree with the vet comments, as it's always best to have a vet check for any major medical concerns first and foremost.
But, i'll add a different potential diagnosis.
Tail dock neuroma, which is a random nerve stinging type feeling from a cluster of nerves caught in scar tissue basically. My girl has one (thankfully minor so we let it be) and she will do the same thing on occasion. She'll jump up off the couch at random times and flop to the floor nibbling and licking at her butt/nub. Or she'll randomly start wiping around chasing her butt (the laughs you get watching a basically tail-less dog chase it's tail! lol) eventually again flopping down. When I look at her tail I can see scar tissue, and it will be a bit more red at times depending on how much she's been after it (more so in the winter).
Just something else to consider Hoping you get answers at the vet and it's nothing major.
Yes.. Good advice. Good firm poops really help express anal gland sacs. I would ask your vet's tech to show you how to express the glands, so that you can do it yourself. It isn't pleasant (stinky!). But it beats the heck out of a vet visit. It is an issue with some dogs.
Mollie is still suffering from this...I've changed her food to higher fiber, give her sweet potatoes with each meal and her stools are mostly firm. Any other ideas? Her anal glands are not the issue.
If the issue is not resolved, take her back to the vet. There may be something else going on with her now.
