Last Summer we vacationed in Maine for a week and Petey had lots of seafood, so when he saw us eating the feast on the 4th, he went nuts! My mom and her SO think we are INSANE the way we feed our pets!

| Those that feed veggies, what kinds do you feed? As you all know, Petey has been struggling with his weight since he turned a year old. We have always fed whole prey and recently have started to feed one meal a day of a pound of ground meat (turkey, chicken, beef, venison, rabbit) mixed with one cup of cooked pured vegetables. It has really helped to fill the big boy up. I buy the large frozen bags of spinach, broccoli, zucchini, carrots, green beans and butternut squash(next batch) , cook them, drain and then puree in the food processor and freeze in one cup increments. Should I include any other kinds of veggies?
Just a note, Petey will not touch fresh vegetables nor pieces of cooked. I basically have to mix them in the raw meat or he turns his nose up.

| | Alpha | at his age he is still growing. how much food does he get a day? if he only gets one pound, i would up it to one pound in the am and one pound in the pm.. i dont feed veggies so i cant help, but when i want my dogs to lose weight i cut their poundage back, and when i want them to gain i up it ... jesse my gsd needs at least 1 1/2 lbs a day to maintain her weight, while rufus gets one pound a day, if i give him any more he porks up and gains weight fast.. ruby is a pig and eats 2 lbs a day plus training treats.

Example for today, AM meal: 1# Ground Turkey mixed with veggies and a small amount of chicken liver. PM meal: One chicken leg about a pound. I used to feed a bit more then two pounds a day with out realizing it, as I didn't measure...now I do. Also....he was getting far too much people food that the kids were leaving laying around. I am all over my kids with that issue, two weeks from now they will all be back in school, so that should help. I think he is around 95 pounds now, been at that weight for a couple of weeks, which I'm VERY happy about. He could lose a few more, but is acting too obsessed about food right now, so we will let him settle for a bit longer at that weight, so we don't create a food monster. I'm trying to up his runs, and play more ball, tug and jumping games with him.

Wow, that's not a lot of food for a 95 lb. dog .. . My puppies, 6.5 months old, are getting 1 cup of ground chicken backs/turkey necks/organ meat, mixed with 1/4 cup of ground veggies and vitamins. For dinner, they're getting almost 2 lbs of boney meal - i.e., 2 chicken backs each.
My adult girls - approx 65-70 lbs. each get 3/4 cup of the ground mix, etc., and 1 chicken back each.
I wonder if you're a little light on the bone with that much ground turkey vs. a chicken leg?
