<----Military Wife to be.... | I just kind of eye-ball the amounts I feed. I think it was Lexus that told me when I first got here that a dog's stomache is about the size of the top of it's head. I actually put a turkey tail on Chi's head the other day just to see how many I should give her LOL
Chi is about 8 months and probably around 50 pounds now. This morning she got a turkey wing and about a 1/4 of an apple (she LOVES apples), since we're not running today but we did train and she got quite a bit of dried liver during that, I'll probably only give her one turkey tail or a small raw meaty bone for dinner tonight.
We started with the short ribs and turkey wings/necks and tails. I tried pork necks a couple times and they just don't set well with her. Also, although some feed pork with no problem, I worry because the bones look so sharp, so we just don't bother with pork so much. We gradually started adding different meats that I can get on sale (I'm cheap:-). She loves lamb but can rarely find it at a good price, so she doesn't get it very often LOL
I know a lot of people feed chicken backs but I've yet to find just the backs here. Although on a couple of occasions I've found small roastering chickens on sale and she LOVES those. She also gets tuna and salmon on occassion. I don't give her many veggies with her meals but we frequenlty stuff her kong with carrots and cauliflower (gassy!). Currently she's getting a lot of turkey and liver because that's what I have most of in my freezer :-)
I just pulled this off of the BARF site: How much do I feed my puppy?
BARF World recommends feeding puppies up to 10 % of their body weight. Therefore, if your pup weighs 10 lbs you should feed 1 lb of food divided between 3 or 4 feedings per day. Growing puppies, especially the large breeds, should be kept lean so adjustments to feeding amounts will have to be monitored closely. The website is http://www.barfworld.com
But if you're only feeding 1/2 RAW and the other 1/2 kibble, make sure you make the adjustment in both.
Yes I am married to the military. Welcome to the club! :-) What branch is your fiance in?

| Oh wow! You guys are in it for the long haul! Is he going to retire at 20 or stay in??
(By the way) My dogs INHALED the raw meat last night....they LOVED it. Thanks for the advice, I am going to try to slowly introduce more of this into their diet.

| | Alpha | Hm, all my friends feed their kids Lunchables and bologna sandwiches. I, myself, was fed cans of olives and gallons of spagetti and still grown up to be 6'2" with 3 body building titles.
It's funny how people will feed their dogs better than their own children. All my friends have kids and they feed them junk compared to their dogs. Cookies, candy, peanut butter sandwiches and any other junk imaginable.
Why is it that people care more about the health and outcome of their dogs then they do of their own children?
My parents fed me probably worse than any other family on the block. But, I've still grown to be huge and won 3 body building contests.
I don't feel that diet has anything to do with the outcome of your dog. It's genetic. If he's genetically small, feeding him Innova Evo is not going to make him big. And vice versa.
I wish my parents spent as much time preparing high quality meals for me as people now do for their dogs.
I think it's sad. |

Diet makes a huge difference in the health of your dog. Lot's of people feed their dog homemade because they know exactly whats in it. I have an older Shiz tzu that was feed Kibbles and Bits before I got her, she had a lot of health problems. But since I have been making her food she has had no major health concerns. Some foods in my opinion are like poision to a dog. |

| | Alpha | Sorry you feel you didn't eat well as a kid... but did you really eat spaghetti when building up for your body building shows? You know that body builders treat their bodies like temples, so to me that would be the same as people who care about what their dogs eat, as well as what they themselves eat. By the way not all people feed their kids lunchables, I think you're
overgeneralizing (if thats a word).... People who feed raw have just found that they can avoid a lot of common problems in dogs, like bad teeth for instance. Don't forget that our dogs can't choose what they eat, but we can.

| | Alpha | Well, actually, being a former bodybuilder/mountain bike racer/triathlete, I am very concious of the benefits of a good diet. I just get bothered sometimes when I see pet owners care more for the feeding of their pets then their own children. And believe me when I tell you that I see more of this than you can imagine. I've coached many kids in eating and exercising right and am shocked when they tell me what their parents feed them. It's kind of a touchy subject seeing my background with healthy eating and how parents fill their kids with junk. America is the fattest country in the world and it's because of the habits taught to thier kids by the parents.
And I know that WE can choose what to eat, but our children can't. They eat what we tell them to eat because they think we're Gods. Children most often worship their parents.

| | Alpha | But then I wonder if all those people are the ones who really care about their dogs diets? I don't think so. They are the ones who will fill the cart up with lunchables and the cheapest corn laden dog food available.
I agree with you it is sad, so I for one am doing my best to teach my kids about nutrition and exercise. Actually I see my friends really taking care of their kids.... but it needs to spread and be taught.
