wow, you've got a full house, welcome to doberman talk, you'll fit right in :-)
Someone here I believe stated that since raw and kibble digest at different rates it's best not to feed them together... I never really looked into it further though...

"why shouldn't you mix the kibble and raw?"

I read somewhere that you should not feed kibble and raw together.
same goes with carbs being oats...rice etc. this should be seperated with meat and vegetables. Meat and vegetables are fine together.

sorry I cannot give you a scientific reason as to "why" you cant but as the above poster said it would be cause of the digestive system.

perhaps try a little kibble morning and raw at night.

certainly having three dogs would not be easy! I have one and he is ENOUGH!

all this study on raw diet is fun and getting me hypo

btw I doubt you have a to buy a book on the subject as the web is FULL of info. Most books anyhow seem to dribble on.........so they can fill up a book and sell it. GOOGLE is great.

cheers!

That is a cool site, it is actually where I got the notion to use the blender, although I used far less ingredients than she did.

Cool, I feed a BARF diet as well.

After my male became hypo thyriod I started to feed this and the improvement in his general health was remarkable. I am very very happy with it and both dogs are on it.

I will never go back to commercial diets.

I was glad to see the original FAQ - I've thought about a raw diet but frankly it's intimidating to a newbie! I saw a few people replied that feed half and half.....kibble in the AM and raw in the PM. Is that okay? Storm has some issues with her coat and everyone I've talked to who feeds a raw diet says their dogs' coats are incredible.

Any tips for someone wanting to go half and half?

I feed 1/2 and 1/2 ish :-) I can tell a HUGE difference in Chihiro's coat if I lapse and give her more kibble than RAW even over a short period of time. She has dry skin issues and the RAW diet does wonders. But, since I live on this dinky remote island and don't speak Japanese, it is sometimes difficult to feed, so I decided to feed it as often and as much as I can.
From what I've read, the RAW and kibble digest differently (raw easier and quicker than kibble) so feeding them together at the same time isn't the best for the dog's gut. Now although that doesn't make complete sense to me (think about it, we eat corn, meat and potatoes at dinner, all of which digest at different rates and are fine. Most kibbles offer grains and veggies in their recipe as well as meat and even many raw feeders incorporate veggies and fruits with the meals that also digest at different rates) I decided to play it safe and don't feed raw and kibble at the same time.
It takes Chi a lot longer to eat a raw meal (sometimes she drags it out for 30 min or more, she really enjoys it :-) and I have most free time in the morning, so I decided breakfast will be RAW and in the evening when we are rushed, she gets kibble.
I agree it is intimidating to begin with, but once you get used to it you'll wonder why you were ever intimidated by it in the first place. It really is very easy.
Now if your main concern is her coat and you just don't have the time, money or inclination to switch over to RAW, try giving her more RAW bones. Our commissary will sell left over bones -many of them are borderline RMB's because they have so much meat left on them, but not quite enough to be a meal - for pennies. I stock up every time I am there :-)
When I can't get decent deals on meat (I feed only beef, turkey and chicken) and am forced to stick with kibble for a period of time, I know that her coat doesn't suffer as much as long as I keep her supplied with just raw bones.

Gawd I love this website! This was a great discussion about this diet. I have been thinking about doing this for some time now, and didnt really know where to begin. I think I am going to try the half and half thing to start. My dogs have been eating Frozen Bil-Jac...but I know it is not the same....I will let ya know how it turns out.

Let us know how he likes it :-) I'll never forget the first time I fed Chi RAW, she was probably about the age of B-i-B now. I gave her a really meaty beef rib. My husband about fell over that the dogs were getting ribs and he wasn't LOL.
It's actually fun to watch them eat, especially the pups. Lex and I started feeding RAW about the same time and would have entire conversations about the sound of bones crunching LOL.
Just remember that the nutrional needs of a pup is ever changing and to adjust the diet accordingly. I think that's why I started with the 1/2 and 1/2 thing too. Figure if I screwed up too bad with what I was giving (or not giving) her, the kibble would help balance it out.
When we first started, she couldn't tolerate organ meat or pork very well. But now she's a goat and can eat anything!
