Don't get your hopes up though. Half of the time, instructions from me are completely ignored. I am met with looks that say "Oh, did you ask me to do that?" | Aren't Husbands great!! So helpful! |

I am a picky person when it comes to dog food and I search and search when it comes to feeding. Each year for the holidays we donate dog food to the local rescue/shelter and I usually buy whatever they want or suggest. And I normally take the time to read the label and try to buy a good food. This food is alot cheaper then what I normally buy, so in theory I could buy alot more bags. The rescue group is crazy about this food, which is great, they are seeing wonderful results. I have never heard of it or feed it and wondered has anyone else used it? Just wondering if anyone has personal experience. Thanks! | When my 5 year old Dobe was two and being being shown in conformation I was having a terrible time keeping weight on him. Unlike a lot of my adolescent and post adolescent males who just didn't eat very well he ate--and was on ProPlan Chicken and Rice which he loved--but I literally couldn't feed him enough to put weight on or keep it on without launching him into massive bouts of diarrhea--his system simply couldn't handle that much food. Obviously the only real thing wrong was that he was young and we were showing him but since my handler shows in the northwest and California he had to be in condition when she was up here.
I tried a variety of foods with him and finally (don't even ask for an explanation of why I ended up with the Costco Kirkland Chicken and Rice) hit on a mixture of half ProPlan and half Kirkland Chicken and Rice--he ate it in moderate quantities and put weight on and kept it on--with the price of kibble these days I should just start feeding him Kirkland again. At any rate I think it's an excellent product at a very moderate price.
That particular Kirkland product is Diamond's top of the line kibble (both the lamb and the chicken formulas) and I had fed it as Diamond several years ago so knew that it was a decent food and most dogs did very well on it.
It's what I donate at Christmas to the local Humane Society who is always looking for food donations.
I should read the whole thread before I start answering--my dogs coat looked great, he had solid muscle--not just fat. I've never had very good luck with any of the lamb based foods so I stay away from them. I was feeding the Chicken and Rice

| I fed Kirkland chicken and rice to my black Dobermans for a couple of years. (I just find that my reds do better on turkey based food so I left them on Pro Plan turkey and barley).
My dogs did well on it, and I have no complaints. I only just recently switched them back to Pro Plan because there is no Costco in the area where we are moving.
I had heard that a number of breeders in my area who normally fed Pro Plan were switching and were happy with it but I was hesitant to switch to such a "cheap" food. I swear, I mixed Kirkland with Pro Plan for about a year before making the full switch. I just felt guilty that it is so inexpensive! But it seems to be a decent product.

| OldDrumDobes-
No luck with the label at my end, I'm afraid.
Also, I found out that the Holistic Kirkland does not seem to be available at all Costco's. There is one Costco in Sacramento that carried it, but it wasn't available at another Costco which is closer to my hubby's work.

| More details on the food can be reviewed here.
There is also a web site out there that rates foods. Funny that they rate Diamond's own label lower than Kirkland's. Examples:
Diamond Maintenance / Score 64 F
Diamond Lamb Meal & Rice / Score 92 B
Kirkland Signature Chicken, Rice, and Vegetables / Score 110 A+
Kirkland Signature Puppy Chicken, Rice and Vegetable / Score 108 A+

| Kirkland is a decent food and if I were in a pinch and couldn't afford my normal food it's what I'd buy, at least for Angel (Frank's allergic to rice).

| I think Whole Dog Journal rated it as a top food about 2 years ago. I'd feed it if Wonder didn't have issues with grain. Lovely food.
I would feed the chicken and not the lamb though, I've heard lamb can inhibit the uptake of taurine. Not good. I'll see if I can find the article somewhere, it's floating around DT |
