Advice on heat please!!

Hey Everyone,

Our little girl is now more of a little lady having just gone into her first heat, shes just over 9 months now and had been expecting it as shes been whining lots over the past few days and being a bit grumpy!

As its our first real experience of this we were hoping all of you more experienced people could offer us some advice, i know we have to be very careful with her and male dogs, from research i've read it lasts approx 21 days, just wondered how we'll know for sure its over? Really don't want there to be any risk of her getting pregnant!

Also she seems really depressed and has become more clingy and cuddly (normally shes pretty independant) and every now and again she lets out a little cry (doesn't seem like shes in pain its more of a sad 'oh why me this is awful what have i done to deserve this?!' kinda cry!) which is awful to hear i just wanna give her loads of cuddles!! Is this behaviour normal?

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated, we are only going to let her have this one season then have her spayed so neither us or Ellie have to go through it again!!

oh your baby is now definatly growing up !!

Heat will last approx 3 weeks.. with the major danger time at between 10 and 15 days.. but every day she needs to be away from boys !!

If she is cleaning herself ok i would leave her.. if she is dripping you can pop little girl panties on her to stop her messing the carpet !!

i read somewhere its best not to let her get too attached to toys or stuffies as they can have a false pregnancy and think the stuffie is a pup ??

just give her lots of cuddles from us as well !!!

Thanks will give her a big hug from you guys and keep her away from cuddly toys! Mind you might stop her ripping them up so quick if she thinks its a pup! Thanks for the advice!

Some dobergirls experience cramping just like us human females. Poor girl she is just VERY hormonal right now.

to answer your questions,less sarcasticly..........

female dogs in heat,can get cramps,just like women can get them.they also can feel yucky.If this is her first heat,she may be like'' what the heck is this????!!!....i feel like crap and im.......feeling...... kinda .....odd towards boys''

The moody,grumpy thing is hormones.I get that way and i'm not a dog.lol

they make ''bitch britches'' to help with bleeding on your floor/furniture for dogs in heat. i just used a pair of panties,with a tail hole in it. i also used a human pantyliner in the undies to prevent blood everywhere.

As far as how long it lasts....i just bank on 1 month as it varies.. however the receptive time(when pups can happen) is between 6-18 days from onset(individual dogs/heats can have this at any time in those days,wich she will permit a male to mount/mate her)
