Fatty Lipomas

My old gal had them, had one surgically removed because it was under her arm. New rescue is getting them, has about a half dozen or so. Old gal was red, new gal is black.

Is there any explanation for these?

Old dogs and people = lumps and bumps. Unsightly, but not medically trouble.

My girl started getting them at 7 now 10 few more but cause no pain just don't look so good. I have the vet check them and they have no concerns so all is good.

Poseidon has (counting in my head) 9 lumps and cysts, all of which have been checked out and ruled to be related to his age (anywhere from 12 to 14). One of these is a fatty lipoma behind his right foreleg. It's about 3 inches in diameter. It doesn't bother him, and he's had it a good 5 years. The vet says we'll remove it if it starts to bother him or grows. So far it's stayed the same size and he doesn't seem to notice it at all.

I just take extra care when I'm grooming him in that spot.

Riggs and Chessie have them. I only remove if they become a problem. Keep an eye on them to make sure they don't change in size quickly or the way they feel.

Fatty lipomas on Dobermans as they age are very common. Almost every Dobe gets them with age. I would recommend showing them to your vet on your next routine visit so they can measure them and draw a sample to look at the cells in the office. The only time I remove them is if there is a big change with the lipoma, like the cells are becoming questionable or if they are hindering them in any way especially the ones under the arm pits.

All my Dobes have had them except my first one and that is only because he died of cardio at age 5 1/2. My second male had a few and I had 2 removed because of where they were. My third, Dax, was a female and started getting them at an early age, like maybe 5. She had several removed over the years because they were at a strange place. I just kept an eye on all them. She did have a lump on her back end come up very quickly, like almost overnight, and that ended up being cancer. Was removed and she lived another 3 1/2 years. But, she was one "walking fatty tumor". They would jiggle up and down when the poor thing would run. Just keep track of them and have them checked out periodically by your vet. Lois
