| Merrick Before Grain (canned) Last time I bought food I picked up a case of the Merrick B.G. 100% salmon and 3 cans of the 100% buffalo. The ingredients are the meat of choice and "water sufficient for processing."
Well, I opened a can of the buffalo yesterday, and holy crap is there a lot of liquid in there! I've always fed the Evo 95% formulas, which have a lot of liquid too, but the Merrick takes the cake!
Poseidon seemed to love it though, all that juice had to have made his kibble (Orijen fresh fish) taste yummier than it already was. He really loves this Fresh Fish Orijen.
I was just a bit surprised to say the least. Why is so much water needed?

| | Alpha | I personally have never liked the Merrick brand and the B.G. formula...has grains. It's a step up from the grocery brands, but not too much if you look at the ingredients long enough. However, I was talking about the dry food, I have never tried the canned, but the kibble portion did turn me off to the whole brand of Merrick. But, as long as your boy likes it, who's to say him no, right? |

| Yeah, I have no intentions of trying the kibble, I've heard too many bad things about their kibble. I feed Great Life and Orijen for that. However, neither of the above makes a canned, and I like giving him canned on occasion. I bought the B.G. canned because it's 100% meat.
I just find it hard to believe that all that water is "sufficient for processing." It's not enough to turn me off, and it's not like the cans are as costly as the Evo 95% are. Then again I kind of feel like I'm paying for water.

| The reason it has so much water is because water is CHEAP. Have you not noticed that when you try to brown hamburger these days that you first have to boil off all the water that it contains? I asked our local butcher about that and he said that the FDA "allows" a certain percentage of water to be added to meat. Obviously, pet food is not regulated and any amount of water that they can sell you is okay. You can usually tell by the percentage of protein in the "almost all meat" can foods. The lower the protein, the greater the amount of water. It's all about profit, not processing.

| I posted on another forum too, and one breeder answered the "why so much water?" question with.....
......."so it's not $15 a can!"
I think that even with the large amount of liquid I'll probably still buy it, as Poseidon really likes it and the price is fairly good as compared to the Evo 95% formulas (which I also like).

| We tried the 100% salmon today and both of us give it a big !
It has a lot less water than the buffalo, it must be because salmon is less expensive than buffalo. It has similar moisture content to the Evo 97% formulas, maybe even a bit less.
