| Spraying After 1st Heat? Hi everyone, as some of you know Heidi is 5 months now. I have two vets, one local & one that handled her ear care for me & I trust her knowledge of the DOberman breed. Anyhow.....we already decided Heidi will be spayed, however I have a conflict about when. My local vet says about 6 months, and my dobie vet suggested waiting till after her first heat. She explained that it can offset the "leaking" that can be common after spay. Local vet said spaying before reduces her chance of mammory cancer.
I'm torn, I tend to sway with my dobie vet (SK) I trust her. When did you all spay your females, at what age? Any vet's reading this, I would appreciate your opinions as well.
Thanks everyone, **EDIT** SPAYING AFTER FIRST HEAT SHOULD BE THE TITLE. NOT SPRAYING, SHE'S NOT A CAT! Duh!

| I had both my bitches done at 6 months on vets advice........never again as they both suffered from spay incontinence from the age of 2 and 3 years old. thats just my experience!

Is it a doberman thing?

| We had Zoey done before her first heat, at about 4 or 5 months, and she hasn't had any problems.

| I prefer to err on the side of caution, and wait till atleast a year of age for all my pet pups, as long as I know for certain those pups won't be used for breeding, they need their hormones for proper growth, and although controversial, there are some health issues considered to be related to early fixing of dogs.

| Spaying after 1st heat Hi,
My Red Dobie girl Cinnia was 5 months old on the 9th of Sept. My breeder recommends waiting until after 1st heat. I have always done as I was told by my vets (spay before 1st heat) usually at 6 months old and all my female dogs (4 over the years) have either had incontinence problems, breast cancer or bone cancer so this time I am waiting.

I read that osteosarcoma is linked with early spaying (in rotties, don't know about dobes), not sure if this has been proven or not.

| I am waiting until 3 months after her 2nd heat to spay my little girl. My vet is in agreement with that decision. That will put her about 15 -16
months old.

| After a lot of soul searching we had Tia spayed at 8 months before her first heat. We haven't had a problem at all with her apart from she tends to gain weight quite easily which I have been told could be down to her being spayed. |
