| Cherry Eye Does anyone have experience with cherry eye? Or the operation to remove it or sew the cherry down? Any thoughts or experience would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! |

Thanks! | I have only had one Doberman with a Cherry eye several years ago. It's not common in the breed. We postponed doing the surgery as long as possible to see if anything else that could be done. Lots of eye antibotics and otiments. But by the time he was 2 1/2 we had the operation done b/c it was getting in the way of his vision. It was tacked down not removed. He is 6 now and it's been fine. I spoke to his owner about 6 monoths ago and his eye was great. It was terrible to look at till we got it fixed. |

She is a show puppy so it's not something I want to wait on too long. I am definetly more interested in having it tacked down then removed b/c of tear production. It just sounds awful, anything to do with the eye sounds awful. |

| Oh yes...yes..yes...I bred cockers, they are walking health hazardsand cherry eye is all too common. I had several tacked as puppies, 1 out of 4 held by the age of 2. We just started resecting (correct term?) the excess tissue and that worked better...thankfully this isn't a common thing for Dobes, to my knowledge anyway. |

| | Alpha | I have done several of the "pocket" technique which works very well. The most important part of the after care is keeping the eliz.collar on because the suture used is very tiny and if they rub at it, they could break it. The pocket technique or some other form of tacking, is generally preferred to preserve tear production.
Young pups tend to heal very well and quickly.
Good luck w/ your pup! |

Good luck w/ your pup! | Thanks for all the info! It's greatly appreciated, the whole thing is a bit much. I know it sounds fairly common and my vet thinks it's a simple fix, it just worries me. She is having the operation on Monday and I will stay with her thru it, hope all turns out well.
Is it really something they try to scratch at? I hadn't thought of this and my vet hadn't mentioned it either. |

| My parents took in a cocker that was supposed to be put down because it had cherry eye. They had it removed but her eye still sort of sags..

We used to work with a cocker rescue and did cherry eye surgeries regularly. I have seen surgeries need to be re-done because a collar was not left on at all times.
Definitely tack it down...at least the first time. If it were my (young healthy) dog I would tack it down at least twice before considering having it removed.
