Raw treats

Hi all.

Have an abundance of elk meat given to me by my dad when he was trying to help us out during Gustav. We needed protein we could cook on the grill since we were out of power FOREVER. Still have a bunch left and Megan doesnt particuarly care for elk. The dogs LOVE it. I mean LOVE IT. So far we have only given them cooked ground elk with their meals. We have better cuts and I was wondering if I needed to cook it or if it is better to feed raw? Not a primary food source (we feed Halo- wild Salmon and rice) but as a treat with dinner. Input?

Thanks
Monica

You might check with your local game wardern to see if the elk might harbor anything that freezing will not kill and could be passed on to your dogs. There is a yahoo raw feeding group you might join and see if any live around your area that would know.
I know here a few deer have trichinosis but the game warden said not enough to really worry about.
I read that freezing killed trichinosis anyway but I am not sure about that.

You can feed it cooked with their kibble or raw as a separate meal. You shouldn't feed raw and kibble at the same meal. What time is dinner???? Petey is salivating!

Can you dehydrate elk and make jerky?? I've never eaten it, so I don't know. I know that you said that you had a lot left so maybe not all of it, but if you could do some, it would last a while and make great training treats.

yeah, we have some jerky strips that weve been giving them. Thanks for all the responses! If the power doesnt hold up to Ike then its a moot point, grilled elk for everyone, human and dog alike :-) Game warden a good idea (I work for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries) but elk is not a native species. Dad went to Idaho for a hunt. Gonna give it a try and see if they like it!
