| Ice cube and sticks OK guys im sorry im on this still but my clyde just cant seem to poop right. For the last two nights he has awoke and not made it out the cage before going. There is a couple posts about ice cubes makeing them have loose Poo. Is this just an internet thing or has anyone gone through this or been able to verify it. Besides ice they do try to eat grass ( cause or effect not sure) and leaves and sticks. I do try keep that to a minimum. If a cant figure this out soon you all we see me on the show ITS ME OR THE DOG

| | Alpha | Have you added the pumpkin in? According to my vet it can take up to 3 weeks for digestive systems to adjust to the new foood....but if he isn't even making it out of the crate...
I would be interested to hear comments about ice...I read the thread about causing bloat but runny stools? Odd because I was told I could feed Jager ice just to keep him hydrated....or feed pieces of banana.
Sorry, I DO FEEL YOUR PAIN!!! |

Im sorry didn't mean to give you that impression!! I would check with the vet, but I add 1 TB per serving. I know somewhere someone posted about amount per size/weight....I am not very good at going back to find the threads sorry!! |

| Good luck. I heard (could be an old wives tale), that if you boil rice and water, then pour the rice out, let the water cool and have them drink it, that it stops loose stool. I have NO IDEA if this works.
I missed the thread about ice, was it recent? I would like to read that because Q loves ice and he eats sticks all the time. His stool is fine most often.
Good luck and let us know what works.
I found the ice thread.

| Rice water or even better Barley water are both good for rehydrating and soothing to the digestive tract. |

| I put ice in my dogs water bowl everyday. It is so hot here, they love to go crunch on the ice. I don't have any problems with loose stool because of it. I think maybe you have something else going on. Have you had a stool check recently? It could be a number of things, food allergy, parasites, giardia.....amongst others.

I found the ice thread. |
The rice works. We gave it to our GSD a couple weeks ago when she had a bit of a stomach bug. The vet tested to make sure she didn't have the unworm type parasites and told us to give her the rice mixed with half a cup cottage cheese.
I've never given Kade just a piece of ice- but she licks it if I hold it for her. I was paranoid about ice after the bloat post.

| | Alpha | I've never heard the theory that ice will give dogs diarrhea. Someone should tell my dogs that since they will all eat ice if it's offered.
But there are definitely other things that will give dogs diarrhea. Dietary indescretion: too much food, eating things that really aren't edible--leaves, sticks, grass, dead and partially rotting vegitation, parasites--worms, giardia etc, bacterial infections of several varieties, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, stress.
If your vet isn't open until Monday and you aren't going to take the dog into an emergency clinic try boiling white rice and mixing it 4 parts rice to 1 part non fat cottage cheese or ground chicken. You can use ground beef but boil that and skim the fat. A tablespoon of pumpkin with each meal will sometimes help.
If the diarrhea, which sounds severe, continues you should think about getting the dog into an emergency clinic though--things get worse fast with intractable diarrhea when the dog also starts to dehydrate.
Good luck. |
