Freaked Out! Only 1 eye is dilated

I woke up in the middle of the night (just a few minutes ago and decided to let the dog out). When he came back in I noticed the wierdest thing.....one of his eyes is dilated but the other is not.....the other pupil is about 50% or more smaller than the other. Its not a pinpoint but noticably much smaller. Freaky looking in fact.

I never noticed his eyes ever doing that before. Everything else about the dog seems fine. The only thing out of the ordinary is he got microchipped today. My dog will be 1 yr old next week. Is this normal or should I be concerned?

Definitely not normal. Probably not related at all to the microchip, though. Did he bonk his head on anything? If it persists, I would recommend a visit to the vet, with a thorough cranial nerve exam.

Last Summer Petey hit his eye while shaking a toy, we never even saw it happen....he ended up with an eye injury just like that. I took him to the Vet ASAP and his pupil was dilated with meds, and he was put on eye drops for about a week. IMO go to the vet!

Yikes! That IS weird. Even tho it's normal now you may still want to just call your Vet and ask about that...

I second the advice on still consulting the vet. This may be a warning sign of neuro problems.

And, Dobekiss, may I just say I adore the looooong Dobernose on your avatar dobie?

What did you find out from the vet?

I've been wondering how he is doing.

Hi guys,

I just thought I would give you all an update on my puppy (as there wasn't a response from the O.P.).

My puppy was recently effected by this bizarre condition under similar circumstances. For three nights running, he suffered one dilated pupil (a different one each night). Each time, happening just before he was due to be put to bed. By the morning, his eyes were back to normal and functioning properly.

I took my boy to the vet, and they couldn't find anything wrong with him or give an explanation. I was told to keep an 'eye' on him for any changes what so ever.

There have been no changes to be concerned about, and it hasn't happened since. It would be interesting to see if anybody else's dog has had this condition, or if anybody can give an explanation.
