Hard skin on elbows and dry skin on ears

Hi there

As my red dobe Bruce has gotten a little older, he has developed more prominent dry patches on his elbows - can anyone recommend a good treatment for this? I remember reading about a good oil to use a long time ago but can't for the life of me remember what it was!

He has natural ears and the edges are also quite dry - at the moment I put vaseline on the areas which are dry which seems to help but I was wondering if anyone could recommend any other treatments?

Thanks!!

The elbow problem is quiet common and is caused by laying on rough or/and hard surfaces. You might want to make sure he has access to soft things to sleep/lay on and try to keep him off the hard surfaces.

Try Shea Butter. I'ts a miracle cream.
I use it on dry skin and to heal wounds.
I love the stuff

The bag balm works great for softening also as it contains lanolin. Its in a can in the pet dept at walmart.

I noticed dry spots on my boy also... but he does not really lay on hard surfaces very often so I have no clue what they are from. He is either in the bed or on the couch. Except when he playing outside. I would like to see what the others has to say as well.

I used Avon extensive therapy lotion on our boy. Worked wonders on his dry patches and he loved me to massage his elbows. He too was a couch potato, just had a touch of rough skin.

Ah excellent, I will check out some of the suggestions and give them a go... thanks!

Yes Bruce can't move for nice soft beds - he has one for night time, one for day time, (plus the couch of course) and a nice rug in the hall! So like you say, ddsalazar, I think Bruce just gets especially dry skin. The patches don't seem to cause him any discomfort in the slightest but it just doesn't look very nice!

Thanks again everyone!

My three year old red dobie was getting these dry patches also. I asked my vet about them and he said they were just calus and would be fine. A couple days later I took my dobie to the dermatologist for another problem and she looked at his elbows, squeezed them and puss cam out. She gave him a month of antibiotic and they were gone. Fur was back and this is from a dobie that lays on concrete. More than likely your dobie just needs some moisturizer on his elbows.
