An egg (I always cook it) added to their meal every other day helps keep the coat healthy as well.

Have you had a skin scraping done? Kylee had some small flaking and hair thining, turned out it be Cheyletiella (fur mites). The vet said it is very common in dogs that show or are around other dogs ie training buildings. They see more of this than fleas. I was totally grossed out, but it was a simple (yet expensive) fix of Revolution every two weeks until not mites were seen via scrape.

Hey there, when Kona had bad skin and coat and bumps and stuff I bought this stuff called MIRCO-BAN Gel. I got it at the local Vet pharmacy and holy smokes does that stuff work! It's anti-bacterial, anti-inflammation, anti-itch, pretty much anti-everything and it's inexpensive and it will take care of just about anything. I recommend this stuff for any skin problem including puppy pimples, flakes, mange...seriously, go get it, right now, go on, hurry up, get a move on....

The antibiotics you said you had him on, could explain some of the flaking... but it sounds like it might be worse than that. If you don't want to go raw right now, you could try Canidae. My mom has her Sheltie on it and her coat (which was never the best) really shined up on it. May not solve the problem, but perhaps might help?

I'm done here. I guess I just not smart enough about the genetic code to play here.

I'd probably go to raw with a good vitamin regiment, including fish oil. You might try giving him the 500 mg Colostrum capsules from the health food store. Do 4 capsules per day for 4 days and see if you can boost the immune system. I'd also NOT use any flea treatment for a time and see if that helps. If you see a flea give him a bath with a mild shampoo. I use either the horse shampoo, 'Mane % Tail' or Pantene. I always dilute the shampoo and don't use real warm water, keep it on the cool side. I've heard good things re the 'Show Stopper' supplement. I use the 'Super Fuel' by the same company in hot weather.

Yes, this is the first year we've ever had this severe of a problem with our boy Captain. We took him to the vet he got antibiotics and a cortisone shot. We also switched foods, and that only helped very little. The vet said they have seen a lot of this in the past few months, and we know a lot of people who's dogs have had this exact same issue.

Another thing my vet did along with the scrape was to "pull" some of the flakes off with scotch tape and evaluate it as well. Just thought I would add that. Good luck.
