Incontinence. Night time leaking. Please help.

Ok, so we are on day 3 of Cinny's treatment for her uti but she still leaks at night..

Does anyone have any idea about how long it takes for the meds to kick in?

Is it possible that the incontinence may be a cronic condition even after the uti clears up? Quite frankly, the night time leaking is really really frustrating. If we are looking at a cronic condition, what are our options.

thank you.

I would think the meds would kick in any time now although it can take several days.

Sorry I missed previous posts...was her UTI confirmed with urinalysis? Were any crystals seen?

My chronically leaky miniature schnauzer gets Prouin, a chewable tab containing phenylopanolamine, morning and night. It has totally helped with no side effects. There is also a product called Stilbestrol that you give a couple times a week. You might want to ask your vet about it or google it. I believe it is a hormone.

I would not start a dog w/ a UTI on an incontinence medication. It is not uncommon for UTI's to cause leaking. I would definitely wait until it is confirmed (via culture) that the infection is gone prior to determining if she needs incontinence meds. It is also important to treat long enough w/ the antiobiotics (typically 2-4 wks, depending on type of antibiotic and extent of infection).
Did they sent out a culture & sensitivity on the urine? It may be that the bacteria she has is not susceptible to the antibiotic she is on.
Most dogs will improve w/ in a few days of being on the appropriate antibiotic.

Wouldn't hurt to put her on Vitamin c and cranberry pills as well. They actually sell both in a combination now for use in urinary tract infections. They will not interfere with the antibiotic treatment.

My dobe had chronic UTI and leaking when she was a pup. 3 rounds of antibiotics finally cleared it up, we also treated her for crystals. That was a year ago, and she still leaks at night!! I hope it works out better for you :-)

Might help to get piddle pants if the leaking is a major problem for you. If the UTI has been going on for awhile may take awhile for the leaking to stop.May take more than one round of antibiotic's the cranberry pills are a good idea. Cranberries are suppose to keep bacteria from adhering to the bladder walls.Good Luck

Cinny has finally stopped leaking but I will definitely ask the vet is another round of antibiotics is in order. I may also invest in those piddle pants, Patchesmom, just in case.

Kade had a UTI when she was 6 months old- took her to vet because of the leaking and discharge. They treated her with antibiotics and UTI was gone on follow up, but leaking was not. They gave her PPA which stopped the leaking. We weaned her off of the PPA and we haven't seen any leaking since. I am hoping she has just outgrown it.
