| Very Sick Puppy - Need Advise Last night Jaden's breeder called me very upset. Jaden's littermate, JJ, started running a very high fever, 105.
JJ was taken to the Vet. blood work was sent out and the vet gave him fluids and an anti-inflamatory shot. ( don't remember what the name is)
JJ went home with instructions of cool baths. The vet said if the fever start to rise again JJ should go to the Emergency Clinic.
At about 10Pm, the fever was going up again (104.7) and was taken to the Energency Clinic.
More fluids were given and another blood test taken. Blood test results were white cells 20,000.
The emergency vet mentioned that it could be something similar to Pano which is due to fast growing puppies. Many Dane pups have these symthoms.
Does anyone her on DT have any information they could share?
Update.
Vet put on clavomox---I suggested a full panel blood work.
If there is an infection-- what is the cause.

| What are the sypmtoms? Is the puppy sore like in pano or worse? Is he eating or does his jaw seem to hurt?
If the above is present along with a high temp, it could be Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy (HOD). It is not easy to diagnose - needs to be seen by an ortho specialist. The treatment is to manage the pain - rimadyl is good for this. Most puppies do grow out of it but some have lasting ortho damage.
HOD is often preceded by vaccination with the rabies vaccine at a young age. Weim people see HOD a lot and have a very strict vaccine protocal in order to avoid it.
If your breeder IS seeing the symptoms I described, she can contact me privately - I do have experience with HOD personally.

| JJ is eating normal. His white blood count is 20,000.
He does not seem to be in pain and vet put him on Clavomox.
I suggested a full panel blood work.
I'll have Fran get in touch with you.
Thanks so much.

Thanks so much. | If he is not showing pain like pano, then it is not HOD. Maybe it is just one of those puppy things and he will be fine in a day or two.

| JJ update - 10:50am JJ's temp is down to 104.2 from a high of 104.8 this AM.
He continues to be interested in food. Not as much in water,
but does get ice chips too. He was given 1.5 baby aspirin
at 9:30 and will get that dose every 12 hours.
It is the only thing the vet said he could have besides the
Clavamox.
He shows no sign of being in pain. Just lethargic and
prefers to rest/sleep on his bed. He is capable of walking.
I put the dog cool coat in the freezer and will put it
under his bedding. This is one of those coats with the
crystals in the border. So it soaked overnight in water
to swell up and now it is chilling.
Please keep him in your prayers. He is so very special to me.
