Pet Health Insurance

Does anyone have health insurance on their pets? If so, what one did you go with and why?
I have been thinking about insuring my pets, but have never in the past and don't know anyone who has. Is it worth it?

JMO..Please people don't get health insurance on your pets...just save $ back incase you need it (hard to do at times I know). If enuff people get health insurince on their pets the cost of Vetenary care will skyrocket. ...JUST LIKE OURS IS NOW.

Actually, faber, that's unlikely to happen. Human health care is what is termed 'managed care' - the patient only pays copays and all billing goes through the insurance. Pet insurance companies (generally) require that the client pay the bill and submit copies of invoices for reimbursement. So vet care can't skyrocket in the same way since the client still bears the initial burden.

I agree that an emergency fund is a better way to go. But in my case, insurance was optimal. I'm a student, and am on a very tight budget. I can afford the $30/month, but if something had happened to Tucker before I acrued enough savings, where would I be? I plan on starting an e-fund when I'm gainfully employed. For now, I am comforted to know that if something major were to happen, I could afford the very best care, not just the care covered by my meager savings.

*Edited to add: In an ideal world, I would pay for insurance until my e-fund was substantial enough to cover major surgery (~$3,000-5,000). I just refuse to make Tucker's medical care a financial decision, especially since I'm in the position to know what is truly in his best interest, medically speaking.

I've mostly come across people that have VPI.

A few are happy, but many have a lot of problems getting reimbursed and don't see nearly the money back that they were expecting.

If you do go for insurance, I would recommend doing it while your pet is still young because once the animal has pre-existing health problems the list of things they will cover goes way down.

(please don't take me wrong...I've had my share of pets when I couldn't afford a horrible situation...but then they wouldn't get a $2,000 surgery that eventually everyone would pay for thru higher health care/ins. costs.)
-Human health insurance tho...is a necessity for peoples sake..of course.
Most people can afford to care for their pets in everyday circumstances, but what you are really suggesting is that only those who have a good few thousand lying around spare should have pets. I think you'd find that means most of us would have to give up our pets. Life simply doesn't work that way.
To be honest, IMO there are too many arguments against you to list, but I'll just do a couple
Pet insurance is not a necessity but human insurance is? My dog IS my child. When you agree to take on an animal you owe it the very best care you can give it - not just the very best care you can afford to give it. Do I have to quote Shakespeare here? These animals feel pain just as we do, they deserve treatment when they need it. The only way I can be certain of doing that for my baby in every circumstance is by having insurance. It has always proved itself worth it for us. I know it's a for-profit business, as are vets, and costs will always go up - it happens everywhere. You made the point that vets can discount for those without insurance, so whether you're insured or not, you don't lose out. I'm sorry, but your arguments make no sense to me. Veterinary costs going up has nothing to do with insurance.

UH OHHHHH!!!!
I've done some quick internet research and reading your posts and am seeing how it can help as vet prices rise with "more sophisticated" techniques...and also the usual with insurance....is it worh it or not.
-I STAND CORRECTED AND NEED TO DO MORE RESEARCH....I APOLOGIZE AS NOW I MY EVEN CONSIDER INSURANCE....IM A BAD BAD PERSON.
PLEASE FORGIVE ME
-I'm gonna do more research and completely reconsider my opionions on the subject.
I'm not sure how I feel about my whole theory now. Thank you for making me dig further into this subject. I love you guys.
-PLEASE ..FOR THE SAKE OF THE ORIGINAL POSTER...CONTINUE GIVING YOUR THOUGHTS....
AND I IN I TURN WILL KEEP MY MOUTH SHUT...as apparently I'm unsure about something I thought I was sure about and I thought made sense.
