| Injury Limping, holding leg up, sitting funny, toe tapping; sounds like ACL torn or injured. This is not easy to diagnose. However, an experienced vet can manipulate the knee to confirm. This can occur from running real fast as a pup or jumping from a car or truck. As far as throwing up, I don't know. If Your vet cannot rule out a torn ACL, see how Champ feels in a few days, may want to try Rimadyl for a week, then try another vet. Just my 2 cents. My Rudy had the same leg symptoms and has both ACLs torn. He has to have surgery soon.
Sincerely,
Scoob |

| | Big Dog | Vet took x rays and found that he has bad hips and hip displasia.
She thinks he may have just aggrevated one side and joint popped in/out.
This really sucks for a 6 month pup to have such poor hips, born that way vet said.
She thinks the stomach virus is something completely different and gave me antibiotics for that, anti-inflammatory for the hips, and another medication for hips, and also a OTC for hips called Dacuasal (something like that I dont have pill bottles in front of me).
When Champ got home he drank some water for first time since mid day yesterday.
She told me about a triple pelvic surgery that is becoming more and more popular, I'll keep you forks updated, thanks for the responses |

| Odd, usually with hip dysplasia they are lame on both sides. Poor Champ, way to young to be having these problems. Let us know how things go.
Will you be informing his breeder about the hips? |

| Hips I have learned more about Dobermans on this site than any place else. "They" emphasize health testing before buying a Doberman pup, or any pup for that matter. Some dogs are prown to specific health problems. Hip dysplasia is often a concern with large breeds like the Doberman, and those who breed should always test hips before breeding. Also tested should be cardio, eyes, Von Willebrand's Disease (a bleeding disorder) (vWD), and Hypothyroidism. Most good breeders will check these issues before breeding.
But I would consider that surgery you mentioned. It will be expensive but should correct the hip dysplasia.
Really what I learned here is to carefully select a breeder that is well versed in health testing and breeds to better the breed, not a breeder that is breeding for money. Bottom line, learn here by asking and also do research. It will all come about in time as it did for me and as it will for you.
Sincerely,
Scoob

| | Big Dog | Yeah I wasnt too careful about selecting a breeder. My problem is when I want something I go and get it and thats exactly what I did with the Dobe, he was AKC registered but other than that its probably what you would call a backyard breeder. |

| I'm so sorry to hear of Champs diagnosis. He is at a young age but HD is treatable with higher recovery rates than in past years.

| Well, you got your buddy now. He may get better but most likely will have hip problems as he ages. Just remember, you can still get that hip surgery, keep that and mind, and don't be too hard on yourself. I bought my dog from a BYB, but will know better next time when I get another dobe.
Respectfully,
Scoob (Jim) |

| I'm really sorry to hear about this. Before you mentioned the diagnosis I was going to say that the last time Lexx seemed lame he also refused to eat and drank very little. However, he has been xrayed and doesn't have hip problems, so it was probably something different.
I'm so sorry to hear about this diagnosis for Champ! I hope that with medications and possible surgery his prognosis is managed well and he remains a happy boy!
Also, with respect to what Scoob mentioned about breeding, yes hip ratings of the parents is important, but unfortunately, it is still possible for a pup to get HD even if the parents tested well. Notably, it is more rare, but still possible.

| Some breeders will look at the records of grandparent's Hips. In all cases it does help some to look at the past to help reduce the chance of hip problems, but with respect to Lexxsmom, she is right too, they can still have hip problems; however, health testing, statistically, reduces a bad outcome.
