Dry Nose?

Does anyone have a problem with dry nose and pads of the feet?

My dog Baron's nose has always been really dry, especially at the sides and top... it sometimes looks like a cracked dry lake bed. It has pretty much always looked like that. More towards his mouth it is a little better and less cracked looking, but I definitely don't have a problem with "wet dog nose" goosing me!

I asked my vet about it, and he made it sound like there was nothing wrong, and if I wanted I could put some vaseline on it.

I just don't want him to be in any discomfort because I know a dry cracked nose or lips during the winter isn't fun. And I hope there isn't anything more seriously wrong.

Maybe he just doesn't lick his nose that much? He seems to drink enough water to keep hydrated (sometimes he'll drink for seemingly minutes at a time).

Have you ever had his thyroid levels checked? There are so many symptoms that can be caused by a low thyroid. Dryness and dehydration are some of them. You may also want a complete blood panel done to check your dogs kidney function too.
A dry nose all the time is NOT normal.

/\ interesting, thanks... I'll have to look into that.

It's curious though that my vet (who's been the vet for plenty of dobermans in the past) didn't seem to think twice about it when I brought it up, saying it wasn't anything.
