| | Alpha | Those of you who had Dobes live for 10+ years, what did you feed him? Did you always feed him that or when did you decide to switch and why? Thanks.

| My first dobe Zeno years and years ago, who I got from a byb lived to be 12 and he ate Purina Puppy Chow, then when a year old, ate Alpo and Gravy Train (horrible I know now) would never feed that now, but the peculiar thing is that he lived so long, had no health issues and a coat with a shine like a mirror. Go figure. |

| Unless my old timers 'need' something else, for health reasons. I feed them the same as I have always fed them, their entire life. Purina!!

| Charlie is around 10.5, possibly as much as 11.5 (he's a rescue so we don't know his exact age). He's in great general health - the vet recently told me that she'd never have guessed his age if it hadn't been written in his records.
I think he probably comes from a good Dobe line, bred with health in mind, which gives him a good foundation. He's always had a lot of exercise - a good 3 hours of off-leash walks every day until about a year ago when I started to reduce it to 1.5 hours in the morning and 30 minutes or so late afternoon/early evening. He's an old boy and gets a bit more tired these days.
Diet: his main food is Nature's Menu. This is wet food, comes in a sachet, and is 60% meat, mixed with rice and vegetables, no additives of any sort. He has kibble mixed in and most days a bit of oily fish (tuna, sardines, or salmon) on top of it. He also gets any appropriate leftovers from our meals and he gets scrambled eggs as a treat on Saturdays
Seems to thrive on it.

| Our first Dobe died at age 5 1/2 from Cardio. Can't even remember what we fed him. That was in the late 70's, early 80's. Our second Dobe lived to be 14 years old and died from prostrate cancer. We fed him Purina Field and Farm which we always got from our local feed store. Also, he got about 1/2 can of Cadilac canned food (awful I know). Dax was fed Purina Pro Plan her whole life. First adult Chicken and Rice and then senior Chicken and Rice. She also was given Cadilac canned food but I switched to Purina Pro Plan canned when they came out with it. She lived until 11 1/2 and also died of cancer. Our new guy, Baron, was on Pro Plan when we got him but I have switched him to Canidae ALS. He was very gassy on Pro Plan and had far too many poops. He is doing well on Canidae. No gas, better poops, and his coat is very nice and soft and shiny. |

| Promise lived 13 yrs 7 months and ate Pro Plan all her life. Kelsey lived 13 yr 2 months and ate Natural Life for a while, Pro Plan for a while and Purina One the last half of her life.
Sabrina (Kelsey daughter) is 11 and she eats Purina One. Sabrina is my Alex's mom. My first male Radley ate Pro Plan for 11 1/2 yrs, the only reason we lost him was because I didn't neuter him and at 11 he had prostate problems, all of his littermates made it past 12.
My boy Shelby is almost 10 and he has eaten Pro Plan all his life.
Ellie lived to be 12 1/2 and ate Pro Plan. My friend just lost her 13 yr old, Music, and she was eating Pro Plan Performance (she wasn't a great eater). |

| | Alpha | The dobermans I've had who lived to be 10+ all were fed kibble. You're asking a lot for me to go back in time that far to tell you exactly which brands, tho..suffice to say, they were considered "healthy" kibbles for their time. So some of the brands these dogs probably ate during their lifetimes were Nature's Recipe, Nature's Variety, Solid Gold, Proplan.
