My old girl who lived to be 14 1/2yrs started out on Purina puppy chow and sci diet mixed. As an adult, she was on Sci Diet d/d (Rx egg/rice formula) for about 8 yrs and then one day decided she'd rather eat the other dog's food. She was on Purina EN (Rx) and then JM (Rx) when that came out and up until about the last couple weeks of her life in which she got a whole bunch of different stuff (to entice her to eat) - her favorite was canned Purina ONE chick/rice or when I cooked hamburger/egg and rice.

You hear so much about holistic food being so much better, but it seems all these old age Dobes were on nothing but grocery store kibble. Kinda interesting.

VERY interesting I would say.

My first male dobe lived to 10 and ate Science Diet Maintenance most of his life. He had Woblers and became paralyzed on all four legs. My last male lived to almost 11 and ate NutroMax Puppy and then Iams Chunks. He passed due to a DCM.

Sometimes I really think it's just genetics and not so much what they eat. Who knows.

My male turned 10 in April. Exclusive Chicken and Rice has been the mainstay in his diet (made by Purina Mills - real chicken meat, omega fatty acids, glucosamine - very good food, but hard to find). When I haven't been able to find that, Purina One Chicken & Rice. They are similar enough in composition that I can switch back and forth with no period of adjustment.

My first Dobie lived to 14 years and ate Atta Boy dry food her whole life. This was when I was young and thought dog food was dog food.

My Mercury lived to be 10 1/2 on kibble. I did change it up throughout his life and always added meats and veggies, cottage cheese etc. I lost him to Cardio. Who knows how long he would have lived if he hadn't gotten one of the dreaded C's.

My mother's dog, Perky, lived to be around 15 on kibbles and bits. Not a Doberman, but still crappy food.

My Siamese cat, Cherrie, lived to be 17 on things like meow mix and cat chow.
I currently have a 15 year old cat who was fed icky food the first part of her life before I knew better. So much is genetic.

well it sure is funny how things change over time.... it use to be purina puppy chow was WHAT you fed a puppy! now there are just sooooooo many fancy good dog foods!

my switch to better foods was more for me then my dogs! I like the small compact stools for eazy clean up. but over all I still like purina.....they really have been around for a long long time
