Purina is one of the facilities that I haven't visited, so I can't speak to their specific quality controls. And what I know about it only relates to the veterinary Rx diets. So I don't know about the rest. They'll often discuss it with veterinarians who call, but not always with the general public. I suppose if you're burning with curiosity, you could call the 1-800 number on the bag... | Leaving 'Pro Plan' out of it as I don't know what is in it and what the quality controls are at the place of production. But after the pet food fiasco of last year any company who wants my business had better be forthcoming with me and me alone, if they want to play the vet or proprietary information game they can keep the product. Again, this post in no way reflects on Pro Plan, just the lesson learned from what was exposed in the pet food industry last year.

I bought a tub of showstopper and one of super fuel. Have heard nothing but good about them. | They are not getting ANYTHING with the pro plan. They get pig ears to munch on in their crates, and hot dogs or other treats at training. I am not even giving my usual fish oil/vitamin e.
I want to see how they do on JUST the food alone. If the food alone does not give good results, I will try the food with fish oil and e. If that still does not give good results, I won't feed it.
So far, I am very happy with the results though.

BIB can I send lexx over so that you can get him to eat too? I don't know what he'd do with proplan since he's never eaten grain... but eating at all is positive in this house! | Sure!
I have gone the grain-free route before. The only one that I was truly happy with was Orijen. I fed the Fresh Fish mostly, but also have fed the regular adult, and the puppy. My dogs all looked and did awesome on that food. It is just so hard to get where I live now. If the pro plan does not work out, this is the food I will go back to when I move up to MD, where it is more readily available. Quote:

I think you will be very happy with the results. Please let me know how they do on them. I can't say enough good things about their products. I used their go-dog also. I still have a 15lb tub of the SuperFuel, but I am not using it right now. Thankfully we are training at night now since it is so hot, but if we still trained in the heat, I would be using the go-dog.

| I do feed orijen when he gets kibble... maybe I'll have to bring him down there for a "learn to eat" seminar!

| Thanks for the Pro Plan update. I really think Orijen is a QUALITY food. The fish formula I *think* has like 6 different fish, which is awesome!
Glad your switch is going well so far. |

| Showstopper I am excited about trying the showstopper and k9 super fuel. I wish the showstopper were more cost effective though. The super fuel is.
We are going to give it the 3 weeks the vendor suggested, and if I see a difference in my dogs I am going to order the combo pack. I might call them and see if I can get a discount due to having multiple dogs in different activities. It says something about a "kennel discount" on their website. I'm not a kennel, but can pretend!
Would also like to try the "young at heart" on Aubrey. She doesn't really have any problems per sey, but if it can extend her life I'm all for it!

| Last night I was finally out of Canidae and done mixing it in so it was the first feeding with just Pro Plan and my dogs chowed. All four of them buried their noses into their food bowls and didn't stop until they had ate every kibble and licked the bowls clean. I'm going to give it 2 months and compare notes with everyone on here before i change over for good but so far they love it. |

| | Big Dog | I've made the switch to Pro Plan Sensitive Skin/Stomach and so far so good. My boy who is usually quite picky is actually whining for his food at feeding time now. I'm really surprised by that. I'm happy so far. |

| | Big Dog | Thanks everyone for all the info! Sounds like I may be going the PPS route too! My breeder is sending the pup home on Diamond Large Breed Puppy so I might just feed that until he is ready for adult food (I know some feel puppy food is not needed but she was pretty adimate SP? about feeding the pup large breed food).
One quick question though, my wife and I have a Miniature Schuzer (I KNOW that is not spelled right!) Would PPS be a good choice for her too????
Thanks,
Chris |
