Thanks for the update, Amanda! Glad to hear you are liking it so far.

I'm really looking forward to switching Red over to the Salmon & Rice. So excited, in fact, that I had a dream about it last night! LOL

stupid bag of Science Diet has never last me so long...

Glad to know everything is going well so far. Our red girl is having some skin issues, and the vet suggested we try the Pro Plan Sensitive Skin/Stomach formula. She has been on it almost two weeks, and so far I am pleased with the results. She seems to like it better than the Canidae. Her poops are also smaller, no gas, and she is also less flaky than she was on Canidae. My other's are still doing well on Canidae, but I may try the Pro Plan for them if I still like the results in a few weeks. Her poop also seems less grainy than when she was on Canidae. Both my vet, and her tech who used to have dobies said they don't know what it is about Pro Plan but most dobies they see that eat it do well with it. Her tech also fed it to hers when she had them with great results. So, I guess time will tell, but like you I am happy so far. Thanks for the update.

According to the food reps and Purina vets that I've talked to (i.e. they're getting paid by Purina), all components of ProPlan and the Purina Veterinary Diets are of US origin.

Purina is one of the facilities that I haven't visited, so I can't speak to their specific quality controls. And what I know about it only relates to the veterinary Rx diets. So I don't know about the rest. They'll often discuss it with veterinarians who call, but not always with the general public. I suppose if you're burning with curiosity, you could call the 1-800 number on the bag...

So here's a question a little off topic and sorry to hi-jack the thread, what would be better for a thinning blue dobe?
Salmon and rice or sensitive skin and stomach?

The Salmon and Rice is the sensitive skin and stomach formula. I feed the "selects" version, which isnt actually labeled as so....but the regular sensitive skin and stomach is regular Salmon and Rice.

That is a good question. I'm sure you saw my post here about my red girl. At first I thought that I may switch her to the Salmon and Brown Rice Selects formula in a few months, but if she continues to do well on the Sensitive Skin formula, I may just leave her on it. I don't want to fix it if it's not broke. The Sensitive Skin one is salmon based. I have a blue male who does well on Canidae, but he is starting to get bored with it, and is always sniffing the bag of Pro Plan. He also goes and licks her bowl after she eats. I may switch him to it as well if my girl continues to do well on it. I have seen a five year old blue dobe in Petsmart who has a good coat for a blue, very shiny, and the owner feeds it Pro Plan for Sensitive Skin, and she said that she gives no supplements. What do you feed your blue dobe now? I don't think it would hurt to try Pro Plan. If it doesn't work, you can always switch back. I think with blues that their hair will thin out no matter what you feed them, it's just in their genes, unfortunately.

Well, were you wanting to leave her on raw? If she's thriving on raw and you're comfortable doing it than I say leave her on raw. I sometimes do raw and home cook for ours, but I just don't feel comfortable doing totally raw. The vet said that she has seen some dogs look great on raw, but very few, because lack of education from their owners. So, at least she's not against raw. She has treated cases of salmonella, blockages, and other illnesses due to raw feeding though. But if you know what you're doing I think raw is the best, but it doesn't work for every dog, just like anything else we feed.

interesting that everyone is so happy with the proplan...

BIB can I send lexx over so that you can get him to eat too? I don't know what he'd do with proplan since he's never eaten grain... but eating at all is positive in this house!

I just wondered if you are still giving "showstopper" with the Pro Plan? Or have you stopped it to see how they would do without it?
I bought a tub of showstopper and one of super fuel. Have heard nothing but good about them.
