I'm so sorry to hear this. I hope you get decent news from the specialist and he can have a good quality life.

Sending vibes your way, that you and Cirrus find the right answers for all involved.

it seems the people with the kindest hearts always suffer the most....shame on the rescue for not catching a known problem with the breed....what a terrible position to put someone in with the heart to adopt/rescue...makes me sick.

I'm so sorry to hear about Cirrus, poor guy. Thank God he has found you. Sounds like he has already been through a lot. I hope if he does have it, that you are able to keep him and help him through it. I know it will be expensive and not everyone can afford it. I will say a prayer for you guys. It is encouraging the post from DLS

One of my dogs was diagnosed at 6 years of age. Without any treatment at all he lived to 12. He was unsteady in his gait as he aged but after the initial pain when he was diagnosed he lived relatively pain free for the next 6 years.
Maybe it can be the same for you and Cirrus (btw, I love that name). Please keep us posted.

Sending good thoughts for you and Cirrus. I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason and Cirrus came into your life when he was in need of a caring person. I hope that the diagnosis is better than Wobblers, but if it isn't, there are many different ways in which it attacks different dogs. My last girl died of Wobblers at 8 with no prior signs. One morning she woke up and couldn't walk. My prayers are with you. Cirrus is one lucky dog to have found such a good home!

Wobbler's, I know it well!!! I lived with it for YEARS with my 2 Great Danes. Listen, its ok, I know its scary but you can live with this and he can end up doing pretty darn good. My first was so bad he was put down at 13 months. But my second one was diagnosed at about 3 years. The vet put him on Predisone. It made ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD. The pred, took down the swelling in the cervical area, and let the signal travel down the spinal cord to his back legs. He was able to act normal and fine. But if i forgot to give him his meds, which are cheap by the way, in a day or so he`d show symptoms fast AND WORSE. So i had to make sure I didn`t mess up with his meds. He lived to be 6 1/2. He was over sized 38" tall. Anyway, over 3+ years i did mess up on his meds and forgot from time to time. And every time he got worse and we never got him back to how he was just before I messed up. Believe me I tried not to forget, but sometimes running out the house, or kids and work, well it just happened that a couple times a year i`d forget. Its like those times caused damage that could not be reversed. So i just want to let you know MY EXPERIENCE WITH WOBBLER'S. With a low dose of pred and keeping his weight down, he did super. Honestly the pred is like a miracle drug. It does tend to shorten the life span a little, but it gives such a great quality of life. They tend to want to eat more with pred and drink more water. Keep up with the water, but watch the food intake. Your dog will be very happy and can give you a number of good years. And as i said, pred is really cheap. I haven`t had a dane with Wobbler's now for almost 7 years... knock on wood... my current Great Dane is now almost 7 and is perfectly fine and no symptoms of Wobbler's or anything. You can live with this. Its not a big scary problem that can`t be handled. They may even have new drugs out now, i can only tell you about my experience with it first hand. Eventually your boy over time, years, even with Pred, he will just get bad, and then you can let him go to his maker. so enjoy him now, he needs you, really bad. Oh I wanted to add, that as he got used to it, the dose was increased. But not real bad. Still its a cheap drug, simple little pill easy to give. It was cheapest if you get it filled at the drug store. At least thats what my vet had me do, she was great and wanted to save me money and told me it was cheaper by prescription.

I am so glad Cirrus found you. It is so hard when you find that special dog and there are serious health problems. But we'll certainly keep our fingers toes and paws crossed for good news. Keep us posted

atl_gto is on a distinguished road
Well, as it turns out the neurologist is sure it's Wobblers, even though it's a mild case at the moment. I have spoken with the rescue, and we have decided it's in the best interest of Cirrus to find him a better home than what we can provide. We just can't provide him the long-term support, since it will require that he remain off stairs for the rest of his life. Our home has 3 flights of stairs, and to get to the fenced yard he will need to climb down the steep deck steps...

It sounds horrible to say, but this is really not what we signed up for. I was looking for a sound, healthy companion for the next several years. We are just not the right home for him. I didn't plan on taking on a Wobbler's case within a day of getting him. This Saturday, we are taking him back to the rescue. He needs a home without stairs and someone to sleep with, and someone to stay home with during the day.

I don't want to seem like I'm giving up on him, but if I had him from puppyhood, had 5 good, healthy, active years with him and then find this out, that's different. I was looking for a healthy Dobie to go on long walks and jogs. It's a shame, since Cirrus met the other half of my needs, which is a friendly, loving dog.

Sometimes the best decision is the hardest....it sounds like you did what was best for him and you in light of the situation. I'm sorry for you and him having to go thru all this.
