| | Big Pup | Staph!! I have a 3 yr old red dobe female that has horrible skin problems. She has chronic Staphylococcus and Malassezia. She is on antibiotics for wks at a time and to no avail it comes back. Does anyone else have to deal with this. She also has Seborrehia (bad dry skin)
She has been tested for allergies and she is allergic to rice and peas. She is on a dog food without either of those ingredients and no change. We have tried other dog foods and no change, so that is not the cause.
I would like other people thoughts and experiences with anything similar! Thanks |

| | Alpha | Was she tested for inhaled allergens? They are FAR more common than food allergies.
If you have not been to one, I would highly recommend a consult w/ a veterinary dermatologist. |

| | Big Pup | I can't afford another test...It was $200 just for the food test! She is costing me more than I can even afford. I had to get the money from my parents which they won't give me more because they are insisting I get rid of her! I will not because she is my baby. I can't afford a dermatologist either because they are expensive as well, I take her to my reg vet and they are trying to help her. I take her in again tomorrow for reevaluation of the skin. |

| My undestanding is that there is no full-proof allergy test for dogs. (this is per a dog dermatologist)
Food reccomendation was a single source protein (like lamb or venison--carb could be potato)something they have not had yet for 8 weeks--no treats .) It can take that long to show results. If you want to give treats give carrots, green beans, apples--they won`t hurt.
Shampoo that has benzoyl peroxide in it. (use once a week).
You still may need an antibiotic to get through this break out.
Can you see a vet dermatologist and possibly set up a payment plan?
Chicken is usually never reccomended for this 8 week period. There is kibble on the market that can be used for dogs with allergies. The trick is finding what will work. You have to stick with it for 8 weeks with nothing else added.
Good luck. |

| My red girl has the same problem, and her vet put her on antibiotics, 3V capsules (which are fish oil pills), medicated shampoo with benzoyl peroxide, and Pro Plan food for Sensitive Skin/Stomachs. I bathe her once every two weeks with the medicated shampoo. She has only been on this regimen for one week, but so far her skin is less flaky and very shiny. You could just try adding a couple of fish oil capsules and Vitamin E to her food and see if it helps. I'm not sure but I think you can get this shampoo at Petsmart. Her vet said it didn't look like a food allergy to her, so she didn't want to do allergy testing yet. I take her back in a few weeks for a check up. |

| | Big Pup | My dog is allergic to the following...peas, tomato, carrot, chicken, corn, oats, peanut, pork, and rice.....I can't feed her any dog foods that people are recommending....but thanks. Her vet put her a antibiotic for 8 wks, and an antitch med. She too has to get bathed with a benzyol peroxide shampoo but she needs it once a wk and it has to sit on her for 10 min. My vet is going to check into the allergy shots for staph. She is allergic to her own bacteria and that is why she is always breaking out in staph. It is all over her right now. I will keep all updated..but keep the comments coming! |

| | Alpha | You might try consulting a holistic vet-I know of a few dogs with allergies who were only able to be stabilized by a combination of traditional and alternative medicine.

| | Married so not Alpha | where are you located - city?
as to the staph - it is my understanding that persistent stap (bacterial) infections are owing to weakened immune system. I guess I am more used to hearing about this in puppies where the immune system is not fully developed. So maybe it makes sense to me the allergy connection - it is keeping her in this weakened condition allowing staph to flourish.
looking at Purina foods, they have their veterinary diet line, specifically the HA food
Ingredients (Dry)
Starch, hydrolyzed soy protein isolate, vegetable oil, calcium phosphate, partially hydrogenated canola oil preserved with TBHQ, powdered cellulose, corn oil, potassium chloride, vegetable gums (gum arabic, guar gum), choline chloride, DL-Methionine, salt, magnesium oxide, lecithin, taurine, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, manganese sulfate, niacin, calcium carbonate, Vitamin A supplement, copper sulfate, calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin supplement, garlic oil, Vitamin B-12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, calcium iodate, biotin, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), sodium selenite.
doesn't look too tasty, but it would likely meet the allergen needs for your dog. You could probably supplement it with something not on the allergy list.
Have you tried Etiderm shampoo? it might be better than the hydrogen peroxide formula.
And I ditto all the other comments about supplementing with fish oil, Vit E etc.
all the best

| | Big Pup | We are trying the Natural Balance Fish and Potato formula...we will see if it helps with the flare ups...it has no allergens in it that is on her long list! Expensive but doable for now. If any feeds Raw let me know, I would like to see if it would be cheaper than $45 for a 30lb bag and feeding her at least 4 cups a day of it. I wouldn't know where to begin with feeding her normal foods. Help would be great! |
