Misterious lump!!!

Hi All,

Max had a lump come up in his lip/cheek area on one side. It's fairly big and solid feeling and it wasn't there in the morning so it came up very quickly. There's no skin breakage that I or the vet can see either. It's possible he caught his skin in his bite maybe??? Mabe it's a bee sting?? The vet didn't know what caused it and neither do I.

Has anybody seen this before? His temp was slightly high so he's got penecilin to take over the next couple of days.

Any ideas?? Can a bang or impact cause something like this? It's like the size of a de-shelled brazil nut or similar.

Many thanks all

A bang can certainly do that (I've had bang-related swellings like that myself). A bee sting is also a possibility, though whenever Charlie's been stung he's made sure that everyone on the entire planet knew about it immediately.

As it came up so suddenly and the vet doesn't seem too worried from what you say, I doubt it's anything serious. Just like us, dogs get bumps and bruises, bite the insides of their mouths occasionally and so on. The penicillin should see off any infection and he'll be right as rain.

Obviously if any additional symptoms come up, get him back to the vet. But otherwise don't worry (sez me, the worldclass worrier ...)

Thanks Crow, I feel better now and I'll try not to worry.

Cheers,

My great dane got 2 of them before his first birthday. He had surgery on 1, it left a scar. The second one went away on its own. It was like a hard marble. My vet said that if i waited long enough it probably would go away, it did... she had a name for it. I forget what it was, it was so long ago. the first one was removed because he was going under the knife anyway because he was getting neutered. but the second one that came up later on just went away. hes going on 7 years now and has not gotten another one.

Please keep us posted on it. I wonder if Debbies Great Danes bumps came up as fast. Can dogs get histocytomas on their face? I hope it just goes away for you. Is it discolored in anyway, bruised?

Yes they can actually get them anywhere on the body. FiFi has a big one on her foot right now, nasty. Our vet says to clean with Nolvasan a few times a day and it'll go away on it's own. Could take a while though.

Could be a bug bite. Could be a tooth problem, too.

Thanks all,

It's going away. THE LUMP IS LEAVING THE BUILDING. Whatever it was (still is slightly) is shrinking back to nothing. The penecillin is working a treat, or something is.

Very pleased and I'm possibly on the bug bite reasoning but still don't have a clue.

What he's going to do next god only knows.

Many thanks to you all,

P.S. There was never any sign of sore skin or a cut or any external differences. Just what felt like a firm round swell under the skin. Gave him a fat lip in the corner of his mouth. The lump was noticable on the underside of his jawbone and also inside his mouth but not the gum area.
