| Stinky cow patty like stooles I bought my Dobie in March of this year... he was 6 months old. He always has had bad smelly gas and extremely smelly stooles that sit on my lawn like a cow patty....when I clean up the stooles it wrecks the lawn. I have never seen a regular compact stoole. What is wrong! When he eats his dry lamb and rice dog food one big bowl a day it is gone in about 1 minute....like he vacuums it up. He has grown and is not loosing weight...doesn't have bad breath.. My husband said he will leave me if I don't find Jade a new home. I am extremely sad about this... Even after the grass has been rained on and there is no stooles on the lawn the yard totally stinks. Please help |

| the bad gas and cow pie stools are indicative of dietary problems. one cause could be the fact that you are feeding one big bowl a day, it sounds like. he might do better on two smaller feedings a day. The amount of food in one eating could be overwhelming his system. Second possibility is that the food does not agree with him. you might try a different food, though allow time to slowly switch over foods because the change will cause gastrointestinal upset. i'd try two feedings a day first if he seems to otherwise be doing well on that food. |

| | Alpha | I would try switching foods, lamb and rice tends not to have much calcium in it, and might lead to rickets. It can also cause loser stools if they are not use to it, it's much easier to digest. IMO I tend not to use lamb and rice unless a dog have digestive problems. And if your husband is serious about what he said...well I think that's another problem in itself. Bad puppy poo isn't a reason to find a new home. IMO. But I'm sure others might have better advice?

| From your description of how you feed him and how he eats I think that is were you problem is. He is eating too much food at once. as was suggested allready, feed him twice a day and make sure you are not feeding him too much in one day. Start by fasting him for 24hrs. water only, then slowly introduce his food back again, less and twice a day. If he still has loose stools then you may want to try a different food. But whenever you change a dogs food do it slowly over a few days, add a bit of the new to the old and gradually increase the new until you have switched him over completely to the new brand.
Let us know how things go.
If you decide to try a new food, I have had great success with Purina Pro Plan Salmon and Rice. |

Thanks | how old is he - 8 months? you can put him on adult food. Sky is the limit - what brand do you feed now? Going up to a higher quality food might actually make it worse, depending on what he is on now. We had soft stool/cow pie issues on higher quality foods. Going to Purina pro plan helped us. So maybe try that? follow DLS's advise on changing over. |

| Good luck. I feed Quentin 2 level cups, twice a day of Innova adult dog food. About 4 or more times a week I mix about 1/2 cup plain yogourt in his food. He weighs 96 lbs, maybe a little more and is the perfect size for his height. |

| Lukas had the same kind of poops. I was actually overfeeding him and feeding him a lamb and rice food that wasn't agreeing with him.
Once I lessened his meals and changed to a higher protein food, his stools returned to normal. |

| I have just purchased Purina Puppy Chow Optimal Smart....I am crossing my fingers...he is out of the lamb and rice food so this morning he had lamb and rice this evening I am giving him hi new higher protein food because I don't think rice...agrees with him.....All puppy food I tried had rice in it.....onlyy stoole I ever seen that was completely solid was probably from giving him the cooked eggs and toast my kids didn't finish one day. Other than that he doesn't get table scraps...but I thought brown bread and eggs why throw them away. How long should it take for stools to become noraml? My husband/ fiance wants Jade gone next week and we have been fighting about it regularly. I really want Jade to remain a member of my family. It kills me to think I may have toi give him up. |

| Not trying to be rude, but puppy chow sucks!
It is like you feeding your dog McDonalds everyday
If it is a convenience factor and you want to get it from the grocery store, go with IAMS
But better yet make the trip to the pet store for something like Pro Plan.
The only time my dog has "normal" stools is on raw food.
Like others said, fast for 24 hours.
Then reintroduce smaller portions, twice a day.
If nothing seems to work maybe try home made food...white rice with chicken or ground hamburger with fat skimmed off. |
