Question about cropping

What is the best age to get the ears cropped? Can the dog be too old or to young?

Around 8 to 10 weeks is ideal. Yes, the dog can be too young or too old. I think some vets will not do ears after about 15 weeks of age.

I always heard 7-9 weeks as being ideal

I, too, have learned through consensus that 7-9 weeks makes for an ideal crop (i.e. shorter posting periods, increased probability of erect ears with correct posts.)

Also, a big thing about cropping, its not all about when they are done (some people have had them done at 14 weeks), but how well the ears are posted.

Educate yourself now on posting procedures, how to correct common problems, and purchase all of your posting supplies so you can practice, practice, practice! Good Luck!

another question

Practice I thought a vet cropped them and that was that you just leave it alone. That is not the case? Will I have to change the bandages often? I have seen different looking bandages on line here.Is there a different style that is better than others? Maybe I can find a book or something.

I think there are quite a few threads on posting with illustrations for you. Make sure you get a zonas tape to do ears. Johnson and Johnson Coach's Tape works very good.

I would like thoughts on this please. If one of the critical imprinting stages of development (the fear development stage) is somewhere in the 7 - 12 week area, why wouldn't we want to crop either before or after that time?

A vet does the cropping. The poster meant you should practice taping them, and the after care, NOT practice cropping. There is after care, and it is a challenge to newbies.
