| stomach too sensitive to raw? just want to share this, and also wondering if there is any dobe out there like moonshine, who just doesn't seem to do well on a 100% raw diet?
moonshine's been home since 21 april. I have researched on raw diet weeks before he came home, and decided that I will be feeding him raw. some of you here have also been helpful in giving me tips and advice on raw feeding.
however, the last 1.5 months or so has been fraught with diarrhea, occasional vomitting, and mucousy/runny poop. so in the last week, I went back to the most basic, i.e. cut a whole chicken into quarters and feeding him just that, and water. I also cut down a little on his raw food, just in case it was a case of over-feeding. but to no avail, as he would have perfect wonderful poop alternated with runny, mucousy poop with bits of bone in it (at least the vomitting stopped).
now I am trying half kibble half raw, as I am still a big believer of good whole natural raw food, and especially raw food for his teeth. so in the AM I feed one cup orijen kibble, and after one hour I feed him a portion of raw meaty bone, and I do the same in the PM. (logic is that kibble stay in digestive tract longer and raw moves along faster). his poop is now kibble-poop (you know, A LOT! BIG!) but at least it is now all firm-ish and no runny or mucousy poop at all.
I know that one should not only feed what is best for the dog, but also what the dog does best on (even if it's 1star kibble!). I still am a big believer of raw.. so I'm going to stick to this and very very slowly phase out the kibble and feed larger portions of raw till one day, hopefully, his system accepts raw.
anybody on the same boat as me? please share!! |

| if you're going to combine raw with kibble, you should do it per meal. morning kibble and evening raw or vice versa. I know that a lot of people do this, i believe gracieface does it this way.
i do feed lexx a handfull of orijen every so often, but not everyday. his stool has never been consistant either, i just roll with it, he never seems sick or unhappy. that being said, do whats best for YOUR dog.

My former Dobe could not tolerate raw chicken until she was over a year old. I use to purchase skinless chicken necks and grind them in a meat grinder, add veggies and feed. I could not figure out why she had moucousy/runny poop, except to guess that it must have more fat content then I thought. My male could eat them ground up but could not eat them whole or else he was puking up the cartiliage a few hour later. The pup I have now eats raw in the morning [BRAVO blend patties] and kibble with raw 80/20hamburger in the evening. This is working well for us and stools have been fine.

I went to raw in the AM and kibble/raw in the PM because there is usually a longer span between dinner and breakfast.

| If you're worried about his teeth you could let him chew a recreational bone or a bully stick mid morning or afternoon. I wouldn't feed him anything raw 1 hour after having kibble, because they digest at different rates. On the days I give raw I give them kibble in the morning and raw 12 hours later for their evening meal. I also brush my dogs teeth and they love it. They have pearly white teeth to. |
