| Beware Of Sago Palm Trees My beloved, Caesar, passed away this afternoon. He just turned 1 years old last weekend and my husband and I are devastated. I am also scheduled to deliver our first baby in 3 days.
Both of our dobies (Brutus is 10 months) ate some seeds off of a sago palm tree. I wasn't able to stop them in time. In fact, I didn't even realize how deadly they were until both dogs began vomiting within a couple of hours. Both dogs received the most the medicine could offer...although Caesar's liver began failing after 36 hours. He was on a number of medications, plasma, the whole nine yards....but it wasn't enough to save him. My little Brutus is still fighting for his life and has a better chance of surviving. Unfortunately, we were told that even if he makes it through the initial treatment, his liver could fail weeks from now anyway.
We live in Southern California and there are Sago palms everywhere. I don't think that many people know how deadly they are. Sago palms are on the list of toxic plants, but I think that they should be highlighted as one of the few that are almost always lethal to dogs.
I just hope that by posting this message, someone who has a sago palm tree will be able to dig theirs up before they lose their precious dobie. I don't know how I'll ever forgive myself for not being aware in the first place. |

5 Deadliest Plants to Pets
The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center wants to educate pet owners and veterinarians on the five most potentially dangerous plants to cats, dogs and other companion animals.
According to data compiled by the Center from January 2001 to December 2004, the most commonly reported plants with the potential to produce life-threatening problems in pets were Lily, Azalea, Oleander, Sago Palm and Castor Bean.
“We typically recommend that pets not be allowed to eat plants in general,” says Dr. Safdar Khan, Veterinary Toxicologist for the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. “However, it is especially critical that these plants be kept out of the reach of animals, as they have the potential to cause serious, even fatal systemic effects when ingested.”

| I am sorry for your loss but you may also want to know about these other common landscape plants to avoid them also. |

| | Big Dog | So very sorry for your loss and continued struggle with your other pup. You are in my prayers. Hope he recovers fast and well. Thanks for the news about the danger this palm presents. I live in LA and an in-law offered me a sago palm as he grows them and I am glad I never took him up on it. Sorry you are going through this. |
