| Flea and Tick Spray I am using Frontline Plus and find ticks on my Rudy. I already asked and posted about the Frontline Plus. Ticks can attach but will die within 24-48 hours, and that is fine. In the mean time, I have been using Adams Flea and Tick spray. Seems it makes Rudy sleepy after I apply. I am not for using the spray, but I don't like to see ticks on him, and I don't want them in the house even for 48 hours. May I have some opinions, or perhaps someone has had the same experience?
I was also thinking, since they bite the dog, don't they transfer any disease, even if they die in 24-48 hours? Rudy is vaccinated for Lyme.
Thanks,
Scoob

list of various ingredients in flea and tick control products http://www.adamsfleacontrol.com/pdf_...oz_3006102.pdf
I would ask your vet because sleepy can be used in place of lethargic. Is it put on him after hes been exercised and is already ready for a nap? Does it seem to affect his appetite? How long does it take after being applied until he seems sleepy and how long does he stay that way? All these things will help your vet determine if it is a problem. Quote:
Sensitivities may occur after using ANY pesticide product for pets. If signs of sensitivity occur,
bathe your pet with mild soap and rinse with large amounts of water. If signs continue, consult a
veterinarian immediately. Individual animals may exhibit one or more of the following symptoms:
hypothermia, tremors, ataxia, excess salivation, agitation, and vocalization followed by lethargic
behavior, and skin and eye irritation in varying degrees. Discontinue use if one or more of the
above symptoms develop.
| The above is actually the same brand flea and tick shampoo, I would read the label and any inserts to see if they use a similar/same ingredient and have the same warning. I couldn't find any problems in a google search with the flea and tick spray.

| | Alpha | I wouldn't use that mist on my own dogs, and I wouldn't have Frontline on my dogs and apply more product (the mist) at the same time while the Frontline is still effective. I just wouldn't feel it is healthy for them. I am not a vet but I do like to go holistic when possible. I also use a holistic vet.
As for misting them I use a natural dog spray Neem spray by Ark Naturals. We are in the national forest and lakes often without fleas or ticks. Note, it wears off fast and cannot get wet or you need to reapply. Don't let the cat lick it off of your animals if you have a cat. That goes for most everything though.
If you are finding these fleas and ticks in your own yard, you can tell by walking around in white socks I hear, treat your yard with diatomaceous earth - food grade -, maybe even your carpet and make sure you keep the grass and landscaping short and brush cleared.
I am sorry he is feeling under the weather. How is he feeling now?

| He is feeling good today. I remember someone else on here uses Neem too. I think I'll try that too. I live very close to woods on 15 acres and so it's hard to eliminate places where ticks congregate. We have a lot of deer too, so I suspect that might help cause more ticks. I'll start using the Neem with Frontline Plus and see how that works. Thanks for taking your time to reply.
Sincerely,
Scoob |

| I also use Ark Naturals Neem shampoo and spray and so far no fleas. I am always amazed that people spend lot's of money on the best dog foods and then turn around and load their dogs up with chemicals by applying these fleas prevantatives that contain pesticides. Remember skin is like a sponge and it absorbs all these chemical into the blood stream. This goes for you to when you pet your dog. Scoob is Rudy getting around better? |

| | Alpha | Neem Oil: Uses, Benefits, How Tos, KnowHow Using Neem For Dogs
As I had said in the previous thread the right type of neem oil some people do not like the smell of. Quote:
To make neem oil spray for dogs (or any other pets) you need 100% pure organic neem oil, the raw (or crude), smelly stuff, not the refined oil extract.
You could use neem oil extract as well, but it does not work as well. (For more information see the page on neem plant spray, and the page on how neem affects pests.)
If you want to use the neem for dogs to generally improve the skin health and the coat of your dog, then using neem oil extract is probably fine. If you are hoping to fix some problem, like fleas, ticks, mange or similar, then you have much better chances with raw, unrefined neem oil.
Neem oil is no different from other natural substances. The moment you start processing and refining them, they lose a lot of their active ingredients.
With that said, lets look at how to make neem oil spray for dogs or cats: | Neem spray by Ark Naturals. Ark Naturals - Neem Bug Free Repellent - 8 oz
Ingredients:
--------
A proprietary formula of neem, citronella, essential oils and gentle emulsifiers. Lady Tawodi » Recipes
As a base/carrier oil, you can use grapeseed, almond, jojoba, apricot kernel, or even olive oil.
(Yes this is the exact recipe, do not bug me about the amount of essential oils)
5 oz carrier oil
Essential oils:
1/2 oz citronella oil
1/2 oz texas cedarwood oil
1/2 oz eucalyptus oil
1/2 oz lemongrass oil
1/2 oz peppermint oil
1/2 oz neem oil
mix ‘em all together, shake before using. it can be put into a spray mister bottle.
There are other recipies if you do a google search
