Vaccine Crazy

Im having the most difficult time finding a vet who isn't vaccine crazy. As a child, I don't remember any of my dogs getting so many vaccines. Anyone else here doing anything different or having the same experiences?

For many years I boostered adult dogs for pavo, distemper, etc. every three years. Now I titer for parvo and distermper annually. If the titer test showed a low number of antibodies, I'd booster. So far that hasn't been the case.

The only vaccine my adult dogs are given on any regular schedule is rabies, per state law.

The only time I give bordetella is when my dogs are going to be boarded in the immediate future, and that's only because no boarding kennel in this area will accept a dog who isn't current on bordetella.

IOW-after the initial puppy series and the booster 12 months thereafter, my dogs are rarely vaccinated.

I do the yearly titer also. My vet is actually really good re not just selling vaccines. I agree with Murreydobes vaccine schedule. I too do the rabies per my state law which is every 3 years, but when they get the rabies vaccine, no other vaccine is given for a period of months.

I don't know how long ago you were a child but parvo didn't exist when I was a child. I guess my question is what vaccines do you not want to give?

I pretty much follow Murreydobes protocol. I do a puppy series of 3 DHPP at 8, 12, 16 months and an extra parvo at 20 months. Rabies at six month (Oregon state law) which is boostered a year from the time the puppy receives it at around six month. A year from the extra parvo vaccine I give one more DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza and parvo). I don't give bordetella unless I have to in order to board (rare because I'm lucky enough to have friends who will dog sit for me in exchange for me dog sitting for them.) I give rabies strictly according to state law. I don't give lepto, corona nor any of the tick borne disease vaccines. Mainly because there isn't a significant incidence of these diseases where I live. If I lived in some of the areas which are virtually epidemic areas for lepto I'd probably give that.

Occasionally I titer to see what's going on.

This is not about puppy vaccines - but Foster, our rescue (age estimated at 9-12 years) received his Rabies vaccine Dec 07 at the animal shelter. State of CA requires a booster in Dec 08. Not real thrilled about that, especially since he is a senior and has elevated liver counts.

Our state only requires rabies every 3 years. Lita's "other" vaccines are due, and I don't really want to give anything but bordatella. Not cause she is boarded, but she is around lots of other dogs. I am going to have to fight my vet on this one, cause it's so standard, it's hard not to be talked into giving them.

Clarifying - CA only requires rabies every 3 years also, but different protocol for shelter/rescue dogs (confirmed by our vet)!

This is probably because the first rabies vaccine a dog gets in the state of CA is supposed to be boostered in 12 months, then you go to a 3 year protocol after that. Since shelter dogs are generally of unknown origin with their vaccination record unknown, they're treated like they've never been vaccinated before.

I don't have a problem with my vet about vaccine protocols-I HAVE had a few heated discussions with their clerical staff about it.

I remember one day when this person behind the desk told me I WOULD NOT be allowed to see my vet unless I agreed to have Rush vaccinated that day. Hahaha..that didn't go over well with me at all, and surprise, surprise! When my vet was brought into the discussion, I was invited to take Rush into an exam room. He left without any jabs.

Exactly what our vet said, Murreydobe. We'll be running labs on this old guy before then to see how he's doing. Always did titers with Scout in her later years to avoid the vaccines.
