| Help!!!! Cheers has a spay complication...anyone ever dealt with this? I just got back from the vet with my Cheers, who had an ultrasound of her belly and is on antibiotics for 2 weeks. She is on Day 6 after her spay, and started spotting a little bit of bloody discharge from her vagina yesterday afternoon. This morning it was a tiny bit heavier than yesterday, so I called the vet and they wanted to see her today to see what is going on.
Apparently even though there was minimal to practically no bleeding during her spay surgery, she has some swelling and a pocket of fluid at her uterine stump. The ultrasound showed the fluid.
Her attitude is bright and chipper...she bolted up to the front counter and stuck her front paws up to say hello to the techs there today! She has no fever, is eating and drinking normally and I had just started letting her have a little leash walk this a.m. (10 min around the block on flat ground).
I've had several dogs spayed, 2 girls who were also affected with vwd, and never had this spotting happen. Cheers had a clotting test the morning of surgery and it was perfect, and they went ahead and gave her cryo during the surgery...so she has more factor VIII right now than in her whole life!!
Has anyone else experienced this? |

| Sorry your girl is going through this.
I've never experienced it, but we've only had one female (our Sheltie) and she had no problems with the laser surgery, even though she was 7 years old.
Keep us posted on how she's doing.

| Sharon is driving back from Ohio and calling me tonight. Talked to Tammy, who agreed it is NOT normal. I'm just glad Cheers has a bright attitude or I'd be worried sick. My little girl....
I took Cheers to a surgical specialist for this spay....Dr and Dr Olsen...one is an internist and one an orthopedist, and they were recommended by gobs of people. It is the place Dobe people from this area go for surgeries. They took her straight back for the ultrasound and she drug the tech back to the room. I could hear her collar jingling as she put on the brakes outside the door.
Needless to say, there was no charge for the visit or ultrasound.
I'm stopping by GG this upcoming weekend anyway, so S and T will see Cheers at that point. |

| I have had 3 females all spayed and have not encountered this. I hope that it is just a minor thing and nothing serious. Please keep us posted as I am interested to hear what it is for future knowledge.

| Stump Pyometra Stump Pyometra
Stump pyometra is a serious health condition that may occur in bitches that underwent Ovariohysterectomy (spaying). In this condition, the remaining stump of the resected Uterus becomes infected and filled with a purulent fluid. The symptoms are similar to those of true pyometra. The risk of this condition is significantly reduced if no uterine or ovarian tissue remains from the original ovariohysterectomy. Diagnosis of a stump pyometra may be challenging as pyometra is often discounted as a possibility if the bitch has been previously spayed.

| Well, the fluid is blood red and not at all like the smell or color of pyometra...that I have seen and it is not forgettable.
Maybe this is something that could have turned into pyometra if we hadn't started the antibiotics today? I assume it is a good thing that it IS draining and not just pocketed up there festering.
I hope reddobes or doberkim may have dealt with this and they get online soon! |

| I think Dobes&Hounds is on the right track.
A small portion of Uterine prolapse tissue is left after a dog is spayed and though uncommon, it can become infected. Here is another similar case.
HELP! This story may be a little disturbing, but I am looking for some advice...
I have a 3 1/2 yr. old (beautiful) Rottweiler name Lexxus. When she was spayed (@ about a year old) all seamed well. Until...she had a vaginal discharge (white). This was 3 months or so after the spaying. I took her to the same vet and he gave me antibiotics to treat the "infection" (not thinking it was relating to the spaying). I continued to give her repeated antibiotics, but the discharge continued. Nothing appeared to work and this continued for 3 months or longer. Finally, a friend of mine informed me that her knew of a Rott and it had the same symptoms and it actually had Pyrometria (sp). Supposedly, this is an infection of the Uterus. Not understanding how this could be, I brought this "idea" to my vet (believe that!). After X rays and failed meds, he decided to do exploratory surgery and found that he had left a "stump" inside which is what caused the infection. There is a point to this story, I promise. ) After the surgery, the discharge stopped and all appeared to be well. Now...1 yr. later or so, the discharge has come back! It is a little thicker, but cream/tan in color. I took her back to the original vet (who did the spaying) and he said it was a UTI or a bladder infection...something like that. So...he gave me an antibiotic. Well, this didn't work and then he gave me a stronger antibiotic (Cephalexin). This started in August of 2003 (the second indication of discharge). Well, it's Oct. now and she still has the discharge. I am so completely upset and torn apart (my dog is my child) I decided to get a second option and took her to a new vet. This vet recommended a scope to see inside. And guess what...I just found out, today, that there is a pouch of "something" holding the "puss" inside (which is causing the discharge). At this point, I am completely distraught and the vet recommended 2 options...1) Use a vaginal douche to attempt to clear the bacteria or...2) Open her up again to see what is wrong. I have chosen option 2, as I don't want to take any more risks. I still have yet to proceed with this.
