| | Big Dog | EVO v. Eagle Pack v. California Natural So I have been driving myself crazy over my yeasty girl and can't decide on whether to feed her EVO with really high protein (42%) but with really low carbs (high calories too), Eagle Pack Holistic (Anchovy, Sardine & Salmon)with 22% protein which is what her percentage of protein is now on the Caifornia Natural or do I keep her on the California Natural Herring & Sweet Potato and give her supplements for fighting the yeast? I'm no expert but want the best for her and the amount of research is overwelming!! She isn't as active as she probably should be (but not overweight) but has a lot of back yard ball chasing time every day with her brothers who can't keep up! I hear it's the carbs that promote the yeast but I don't know that I want to double the amount of her protein or keep her in the 22% range of protein with higher carbs and play the supplement game...
I'm soooo desperate! |

| I read some article in the Whole Dog Journal that supplementing with coconut oil is supposed to help with dogs that have yeast problems. Have you tried that as well?
How old is your girl? I did a few months on Evo and my guys did well on it. |

| | Big Dog | I haven't tried the coconut oil but I will look into it.
I like the EVO but I'm worried that 42% protein will be way too much for her, she's 5. Did your dogs gain weight on it? Are they very active? |

| Are we talking about yeast infections in the ears? Skin? Many veterinary dermatologists believe that the vast majority of yeast infections have an allergy at the root of them (food or environmental). The allergy causes skin inflammation, and results in an ideal environment for yeast colonization. If it were me, I might try a limited ingredient diet like CA Naturals Chicken and Rice, and continue treating the yeast infection. Once the yeast infection clears up, see if it stays gone while on a limited ingredient diet. But since it's summer, there's a huge possibility (in fact, more of a probability) that it's an environmental allergen. Most dogs don't have actual food allergies - they have food sensitivities (one is immune mediated, one isn't). Perhaps discuss treatment for environmental allergies with your vet.

| | Big Dog | It's in her ears, feet and now her genitals. I changed her diet to CN Herring & Sweet Potato a few weeks ago and it cleared up her swollen eyes but that's it, not her ears, feet or genitals, I have't treated her for the yeast other than that food change which is why I'm asking for advice for my next step - another food change with lower carbs and higher protein or same food with supplements (Nzymes?)... |

| | Big Dog | Yes, I tried the Chicken and Rice before the Herring but it didn't help her at all hence me changing her protein altogether... |

| I switched to EVO about 6 months back, after a store in my town finally started stocking it. I feed raw in the evening and EVO in the am. Rex likes it and looks good on it. Raw is probably the best but as far as kibble goes EVO is very good.

| My two did not gain any weight on it that I recall...they are really active dogs. They liked the beef formula. I rotate premium kibbles via Whole Dog recommendation and my dogs look great so far on...Wellness Core, Evo, Nature's Variety, Pinnacle. TOTW salmon. I feed the NV's raw patties at night.
I avoid chicken/turkey because Rex seems a little itchier on it. My guys eat beef, venison, salmon and lamb.
Rex gets itchy every summer, with environmental allergies, however his coat is gorgeous and no dandruff or flakiness. He's on thyroid 2x day, 4 caps fish oil p.m., grapeseed extract, MSM and glucosamine, and just started digestive enzymes from Nature's Farmacy.
If you can look up a back issue of Whole Dog journal, it really said that for yeast problems coconut oil could really help. If she ends up with staph or a bacterial infection, then she's going to need antibiotics for a while to get over that. |
