| | Lil Pup | Liver Disease in Red Female Doberman I sadly had to put my red female down. I forget the proper name, but basically her liver would not process copper. She was slowly dying of copper poisoning. My Vet, found that this happens in Red Females. Has anyone found this to be true or happen to their dobe?
Input?

| mfauris,I am so sorry you lost your Dober Girl.
Copper Hepatitis, i have not heard of this for years. It is some kind of biological defect that affects their ability to remove copper from the body. Usually occurs more frequently in females than males. Most cases are not diagnosed until the Dobe is in liver failure.

| So sorry to hear about your girl. I have heard of copper storage problems as I was looking into liver problems as my girl was diag with CAH (Chronic Active Hepatitis) over a year age.
Again, so sorry for your loss.

| I don't know that it's tied to color, so much as it is tied to dobermans, females seem to be more impacted by copper issues. I lost my beautiful Gloria, Am/Can/Int'l Ch. Wingate's Miami Sound Machine, WAC, to this at age 5 in 1995. At the time, the commercial food she was eating had the highest copper content of any food on the market, unbeknownst to me. Don't know if that was the cause of it, but it certainly didn't help. I'm very sorry for your loss.

| I am very sorry for your loss. I have heard about quite a few cases of copper toxicosis, especially tied to certain lines. Unfortunately, once symptoms are apparent, it is usually quite late and the prognosis is poor. I'm sure our vet members can speak more about that.

Would be interested to see if the content has changed since 1995. |
