| I think you are describing "flank sucking" which can be trait in some Dobes. Some of them also suck on a blanket their whole lives. I owned a big red boy who always had a blankie wadded between his front paws which he sucked on before he fell asleep.
I guess she could try to teach him the command 'leave it" if he is doing this all day long. It may just be a comfort thing to him when he is falling to sleep. |

| Got a side sucker does he. There are many thoughts as to why some dogs do this. But no one knows for sure why they do it. They can actually 'stain' their black coats red from the saliva.
It is referred to as flank sucker or side sucker syndrome.

| It is an OCD behavior. My boy sucks his blankies. The older he gets the less he does it.

| As others have stated, it's common with Dobes. I looked into it as I was also concerned with a possible problem. From what I read, it is very similar to a child sucking it's thumb. It can be a sign of frustration or boredom. |

| My English Mastiff does this also. She has a very neorotic personality to begin with. She was arescue at 9 months old and she has a lot of baggage becuase of the abuse/neglect/lack of socialization. I would try bitter apple and give the dog someting else to do. (Fozen kong) Sometimes if they suck to much they can cause sores. My girl has a red stain on her flank. Some of these trick work with some dogs, none work with my girl. Good luck |
