| von Willebrands Disease vWD -- Testing Question North East Hello, everyone I am from New York and I would like to know if anyone has tested their dog for vWD around this area, and possibly if they can refer me to a place. I have been to vetgen website but was told to look for a office that does that in the area for certain reasons. Thanks for your help! |

You then email or call that person/group and give them a credit card # dogs info and that its a vwd test and they turn it over to vetgen who bills your card. Vetgen then mails out the swabs directly to you, directions are enclosed and it is very easy to do. You write the dogs info on the slip the swabs come in (they send 3 per dog) and on the form, drop it all in an envelope and mail back to them.
If you choose email pdf you will get the printable form via email in a couple of weeks from the time you mailed it in. Mine took 1 day less than 2 weeks.
There isn't really a need to have a vet do it as its easy to do yourself and by using the clinic you will get the clinic price of $99 instead of $149.
Because it is a dna level test it never has to be repeated altough many vets will test clotting before surgery as there are other things that can cause clotting issues. |

| Is it possible that the breeder had this checked before I purchased the dog? |

| Possible, but unlikely if the breeder did not mention it when you bought the dog. Check your paperwork or call the breeder and ask. You get a certificate from vetgen to keep with your dog's other vet records that shows their status via DNA testing.
I paid the higher cost, had vetgen mail me the packet, did the cheek swabs and mailed them back. It took about 2 weeks to get the certificate in the mail. |

| | Alpha | Do you know the vwd status of the parents? In some cases you can know pups results without testing. If both parents were clear then pups have to be clear, if one was clear and the other affected all pups have to be carrier.
Some breeders do test for themselves to choose which they will hold back for future breeding. I would hope they would disclose the results but not all do. |

| I contacted VetGen per suggestion on this list and they got me in touch with a Dobie group in Georgia. The person called me as soon as she got my E-mail and I made the April 30 deadline so my kit should be on its way.

| If the dog is a carrier does the dog have the same effects as if it is infected? |

| | Alpha | Carriers do not have bleeding issues related to vwd (only some affecteds). Any status can have problems due to other causes. Carrier only makes a difference if you plan to breed. Quote:

| Okay Sorry I spoke to some of my friends and came up with a few more interesting questions about this issue. First off, Does AKC require you to check the dam and sire for this before they register it and STAMP them AKC Certified?? Also Are there any signs of a pup to be infected? And What age approximately do they usually get effected? Judging by Romeos mom she looked like she was fine. |

No, their papers are NOT stamped. VWd is not one of the big killer's in the breed, most VWd affected Dobermans live perfectly normal lives with NO bleeding issues. The huge problems we have in Dobermans are Cardio/Cancer and CVI.
