| Looking for future pup! (NH) hello, my name is dennis. in the near future (may, june) i'll be hopefully purchasing a new friend! so i was wondering if any of you know or are a breeder in the New England area! I'm not looking to spend 2k+ for a dog, i don't want a show dog, just a house dog that's gonna be a great companion! i would like the dog to be cropped and chopped (tail, ears) and would def like a male, black/rust color. any information would be great!! thanks!

| You are not really paying for show vs pet quality. You are paying for a healthy, well socialized puppy from health tested parents. A pet pup from a reputable, quality breeder will be priced btw $1500-$2000.00. Dobermans are a very unhealthy breed, so you definitely want to go with a breeder that thoroughly health tests, breeds for longevity and temperament. What you don't spend up front you will end up spending in vet costs, if you go with a less than stellar but "cheaper" breeder.
Check the DPCA breeders referral on DPCA.org for breeders in your area.
Welcome to DT and good luck!

| Erm, don't ask a breeder for a dog with a "chopped" tail.
I recommend taking a look around the forum and reading a few threads. Many searching some information that you'd like to know prior to investing your money - and really, it's an investment in many ways. |

| If you don't want to spend that much, go over to Doberman Rescue Unlimited
Not sure where in NH you are but they are right out of sandown, nh (close to Londonderry, NH)
1.5-2k doesn't get you a show dog, it gets you a healthy dog. |

| Okay. One more thing. The term is breeder(s) rather than dealers. There are puppy brokers, but they get pups from puppy mills and you definitely do NOT want to purchase from a broker or even anybody that calls themselves a dealer. You want to purchase from a reputable breeder.
Here are some breeders you can check with: In MASS: Chalmar, Kettle Cove. In CT: Tiburon. In VT: Rebholzer. Just add Dobermans to the kennel name and google, you should be able to find them.
Good Luck!

| Hi Dennis, welcome to DT!
Others have already mentioned the cost of buying from a reputable breeder and a few reasons to do that (mainly health). But there are so many reasons it is so important not to spend your money to support back yard breeders. I know the money may seem like a lot, and it is hard to resist finding a better "deal", but in the end it will be worth it and you will feel good about your decision.
1. ears will be done for you (at the right age and included in the cost)
2. you will have lifetime support (this may be very helpful while posting those ears!)
3. those ears will be done WELL (not a hack job by some vet who does other breeds)
4. TEMPERAMENT. In addition to health, good breeders produce stable and sound dogs who will make the best companions for all of their years. Even if you hit the jackpot with a healthy byb dog, you could still run into behavior problems like fear or aggression...or both. With a strong breed such as ours with a "dangerous" stigma already attached it is so important not to add to that stereotype.
5. Obviously the health stuff already mentioned
And lastly, but certainly not least...there are SO MANY dogs that are being put to sleep every single day because of people breeding their dogs just to make and sell puppies. If you do not want to rescue a dog from a shelter or breed specific doberman rescue as mentioned above (great idea btw!), then please please PLEASE support a responsible breeder. These are the people who breed only with the intention of improving our beloved breed and do so selectively.
Most people don't realize that the breeders who produce "show dogs" will often only get 1 or maybe 2 "pick puppies" from a litter and the rest are sold as pet/companions. That means they might not be the very best "show" pup, but are sure dang close...and all the great breeding behind them.
If it is a fact of trying to swallow that price tag, please do some reading around the forum and hopefully you will see what we are all saying. If it is a matter of not being able to pay that price tag, I suggest waiting a little while longer until you can save it up. It will be worth it.

They're in southern NH. Get started on the adoption process now - you will get a great education in Dobes by talking to the folks at DRU. They will help you understand all the reasons Dobes have failed in other homes, to be sure it's the right breed for you and your home. |

| PS, what you see on the website is only a fraction of the dogs there. Don't start window shopping what you see on DRU's website - know that there are dogs who come and go constantly - start talking to DRU now. |
