Are dobermans being over-bred? Hi, after losing my beloved Gracie recently, I've been on-line looking at rescue groups, adoptions, breeders, you name it. What I get a sense is that there are so many dobermans out there! From new puppies where breeders want anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. Dobies can be shipped anywhere, cropped or not cropped, male, female, rust, black, cream, blue, you name it. One breeder has 5 female moms nursing their young on separate live cams. One mom has 14 pups. How is this responsible breeding? Aren't there any regulations in place? I feel like I'm just beginning to scratch the surface of an epidemic in our country. Not just with dobermans, but all kinds of dogs. There seems to be an explosion of dogs! Are people, because of the recession, looking to make their income off of dogs or has it been like this for awhile? I've just recently filled out an application with DAR&E through dobe.net. I have a home visit scheduled for this Sunday. Is there anything else we can do to stop or curb this insane overbreeding? I don't get it...

You must be new here Overbreeding from back yard breeders is a constant discussion and debate on this site. We try to educate people on the difference of a back yard breeder and a responsible, ethical, reputable breeder. It is indeed a very large problem.

Yes, and I've gotten so much valuable information here. Whoever started this site, she/he is a genius! I just hope other people do their research as well. Are there regulations in place concerning over-breeding? Where does one even start? Government? State? Local? It just seems like something needs to be done. I'm going to do more research on that as well.

All you can do at this time is educate others on the ethical breeding and treatment of all animals. Promote rescuing and explain to others as to why they should not support a BYB. Sadly, there are no laws regarding 'ethical breeding'.

| Are dobermans being over-bred? I guess it's the region that you live in that seems to have so many breeders (reputable and backyard). I'm in NYC, and although I didn't look at websites like Craig's List, Kijiji or the like, or pet shops (because I know better, as a former dog show exhibitor and reputable Bichon breeder), I had a hard time finding a Doberman! Even adoptable dogs on Petfinder weren't in my area! As for the breeders on DPCA, there weren't THAT many to begin with, and again, unless we wanted to drive a loooong way and stay on a long waiting list until a puppy became available, we were out!
If you're finding a lot of breeders, I assume that they're backyard breeders that are not breeding responsibly - because they'd close up shop FAST once they realized that there's not much profit to be made - if its done RIGHT. Responsible breeding is done because of a love of the breed, and wanting to better it, one dog at a time, by trying to ensure the health and conformation of the breed in future generations. Backyard greeders are simply putting two dogs together to make puppies and subsequently, money. They don't take the time to research pedigrees and lines to avoid health issues in future generations to devoid the breed of certain diseases inherent in Dobermans such as vWD, cardiac issues, etc. They don't travel hours, stay over at a hotel, just to breed to a specific dog, either. They put a male and a female together with unknown health statuses and make puppies. If they eventually get sick, it's the new owners that get stuck with the heartache and high vet bills. In this economy, people will do anything to make money - making puppies seems like an easy, fast buck. What they fail to realize (or maybe they just don't care) is the horrendous effect it has on the breed! And maybe they can't get rid of all the puppies - so they dump them off at their local shelter, further increasing the epidemic of homeless animals...
I'm so happy you're rescuing through DARE. I wanted to - but I'm out of their adoption area - and it said it on Petfinder. I even called them and asked - I was willing to drive down there to get a puppy. I will say, that that area has a lot of really pretty Dobies! I would see a picture, get all excited, and then realized it was DARE - well, back to the drawing board!!! My happy ending was through DDR (Distinguished Dobermans Rescue). We got Bella 4 months ago, and we are totally in love!!! I could be wrong, but I think everything happened the way it did so we'd adopt her - its fate!! I hope you find your fairy tale dog thru DARE and are as happy with it as we are!!! ❤ Sent from my iPhone using Petguide.com Free App |

Yep, Best European Doberman puppies and trained adult Doberman Pinschers for sale, I guess they're in Utah now. I don't know, just didn't get a good feeling when I went to their website initially. And then they rotate puppies out because the mom only has 8 nipples and 14 pups? Seems like a lot of stress to the moms which I think is unnecessary. And then what, what happens to the pups if they are not "sold"? Also, when do they give time to the moms before they are "bred" again? In my initial grief, I even chatted with the owner on their facebook website. He seems sincere and there is a lot of verbage on the site, but, I don't get a good feeling with this breeder. Call it a woman's intuition or whatever.

Thanks for the input MelissaRz. I'm taking things slow, not jumping in right away. I want to make sure, that whatever dobie dog is next for me, that it clicks. a week from now, a month from now, or a year from now, I'm willing to take my time for this breed truely is special. When it does happen (and not IF), I'll let you guys know!

With that being said, he's better than a lot of the greeders out there in terms of breed knowledge.
He is known for importing pregnant bitches. I'm guessing that some of those bitches are sold along with the puppies to make room for more import bitches.

what?? "He is known for importing pregnant bitches. I'm guessing that some of those bitches are sold along with the puppies to make room for more import bitches. from RottenVonSpotten." Are you serious? That makes me want to throw up. I'm disgusted and and anger is rising up within me that I'm not sure how to channel or how I can help against this kind of thing.

Welcome from Kansas. You can TRY to educate people, but hey, when they already know everything it's hard to tell them anything. I work with a couple of guys that are complete idiots. Don't believe in neutering their males.

Guys are like that sometimes, don't understand.. A guy thing? Perhaps, but do what's best for the dog, and not yourself. Dogs are in your care and trust you to do the right thing for them.
