| The Ultimate Challenge: Breeder in MS or anywhere close? I am doing my initial research on Dobie Breeders for a new family member sometime within the next year. I live in Mississippi and have yet to find any breeders who do thorough testing for temperament as well as the basic health testing. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could point me in a good direction of a breeder semi-close by? I would prefer not to ship a puppy, would like to visit the parents, and so someone in the southeast or at least within a 6 hour or so radius would be desirable.
This dobie would be a family pet only. We are a family with 2 children, two other dogs, house cats and horses and so a dobie line with a temperament that has a low prey drive would be preferable.
I am usually a strong proponent of rescue.. and all my other dogs are such, but since spending a month with a Dobie sleeping in my bed with me during an internship during vet school, and the wonderful Dobies I have as clients, I am breaking my rule of Rescue ONLY this one time...but I want to do it right. Because of our demographic (kids and other dogs) we don't qualify for most Dobie Rescue groups.
Any help and guidance any of you have would be greatly appreciated.
TIA
Rachel |

| Welcome to the forums. Have you checked the DPCA breeder referral list? It's not an end-all-be-all list as some less-than-stellar breeders slip heir way onto the list but it's a good place to start. Keep in mind that you may not be able to meet both dam and sire. In order to find the best match for their dog, many breeders go to other breeders when it comes to finding the right sire for their litter.

Unfortunately most of the ones nearby have old websites. I have contacted Rebecca at Southern Pride and am awaiting a response.
Thank you for your help. |

| Not sure where you are located, but there is a show coming up in Starkville, MS, Jan 12 & 13th. Also, one in Hattiesburg, MS, Feb 21-24. Attending a show is a good way to meet local breeders that are not DPCA members. Not all breeders listed on the DPCA breeders list are good breeders and not all good breeders are listed on the DPCA breeders list.
If you are interested, let me know and I will be happy to post times and ring#'s for you.
Good luck with your search.

| Ashville, AL might be a little bit of a drive, but Dillon Dobermans might be worth checking out? They have a litter on the ground at the moment too, no idea if any are still available.
On the rescue front, have you checked out Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue? They might extend to your area - worth contacting them, at least. They have several dogs listed at the moment as being good with other dogs.

| You may have to extend your search to Florida, Georgia, Arkansas, and/or Texas as it can be kind of challenging to find reputable breeders with litters on the ground in Mississippi or Louisiana.

| I would talk to Nancy Young of Dillon Dobermans in Alabama - she originally started in Dobermans up here in PA - a business transfer took them to Alabama several years ago. I've owned a dog from her.
I would also consider going farther and talking to Elizabeth Barrett of Adamas Dobermans in Georgia. She hopefully has a litter coming in 2 months :-)

| I have found a lady named Becky Floyd with Southern Pride Dobermans. She seems to have all the testing done (DCM/Thyroid/VWD/OFA/Eyes) and holds them until they have had their ears done and second set of vaccinations. She also has encouraged me to visit her dogs. All seems on the up and up (almost too good to be true).. but wanted to check with those here to see if she was familiar to you all.
Thanks! |

| I will start by saying that I am no expert when it comes to finding the best breeder, as it is all new to me. I just learned what to look for when I was at the puppy vs rescue stage in my doberman search. I simply knew the health testing that should be done.
That being said, I spoke with Becky Floyd before I decided to go with a rescue dobie. A friend, who is also a vet, highly recommended her as she has now had 2 dobies from Becky and has been very pleased with their temperament, looks, and health as well as with the breeder. I'm sure that others on here who know way more about what to look for in a breeder will chime in, and will be able to find you the perfect breeder, just in case this lady is not it. I just wanted to tell you about my experience and my friend's experience with her. (I also searched her name on this forum before, and it did come up with some threads about her, so you may want to check into that).
