Stud Dog owners -Crossposted
This is great. A post from a Pharaoh Hound group I am on. Something to think about.
Just a thought:
If a bitch owner approaches you about Stud service, forget about all this BS about compatible pedigrees, cross-faulting, inbreeding and outcrossing, frozen versus live cover, stud fees and puppy-back deals--you're not there yet. No, I'm not talking about health-testing and titles finished--you're not <there> yet, either.
First things first: You need to find out WHO this person is who wants a litter that YOU are going to be partly responsible for and WHY they want to breed a litter and WHERE those pups are going to be raised and WHETHER or NOT this person has the money, space, commons sense, physical and mental health, co-operative spouse, and determination to keep the WHOLE litter for their WHOLE lives if they do not sell to excellent homes.
It takes a while to figure out if a person is on the same page as you are about breeding dogs the right way. Don't assume anything. Don't help someone get in over their head with a litter they can't raise or vet bills they can't pay.
I believe it is the responsibility of stud dog owners to let reasonable, responsible, serious dog breeders use their stud dogs so our awesome breed can continue. But we have to take care that we don't help clueless or irresponsible people get themselves and their dogs in a mess, and ruin our own reputations in the process.
