| Brandy's BYB Pedigree Last night I dug out Brandy's "pedigree" and looked up some of her ancestors. My poor girl has so many relatives that are the same on both side!
When I looked up Soquel's Distant Thunder, you could have knocked me over with a feather! Cheryl Gates is listed as one of his breeders. What a small world the doberman world is! I'm sure she wouldn't have been happy about Brandy's breeding, but I would have loved to have talked to her about Brandy's great-grandpa.
Also, some of Brandy's great-grandparents are from the HQ doberman line. We met her this summer at our first dog show!
I've included a picture of Brandy's pedigree if anyone has anything they notice or would like to add. I'm trying to learn as much as I can so good or bad I'd love to hear it!

| | Alpha | Cheryl was deeply disappointed and saddened in what happened with Thunder... yours isnt the only BYB pedigree he popped up in. We had a few discussions about it over the years, and trust me she was aware and it wasnt her fault.
ETA: Leading Edge was also the kennel name for another Thunder progeny that wound up in the BYB circles. its a damn shame |

| Sadly, that's what I thought. I love my girl with all my heart though, will just make a better choice next time.
Slightly off topic, does anyone know what the "F: 14.6% means"? It's toward the top of the page.

| You say Brandy is six years old?
How are her holters and echoes coming back?

| She'll be 7 on Christmas Eve! I've talked to both vets (our old one and the new one) about that and we've decided not to do them for now. Unfortunately with all my husband's medical issues we probably wouldn't have the money to move forward on them anyway. (I know there's some good cardiologists down in Madison!). Hopefully in the future that will change, but probably not until he finds a job. They always tell us her heart sounds good, but I know that doesn't mean a lot when they're just listening with a stethoscope.

| Except for the consistent half-brother, half-sister breedings throughout the pedigree and of course the DCM. It's not a bad pedigree, with some good dogs close up. You can see photos of some of Brandy's ancestors on the HQ website. Also, not shown on the pedigree, is a fair amount of longevity. Check out Dobequest, you will find a number of LC's in that pedigree.

| I did notice that and was happy to see it! It's been really interesting to learn about her "family".
Thanks everyone for your comments so far!

Thanks everyone for your comments so far! | pedigrees are a bit addicting...regardless of quality, I always think it's so fun to go back as far as possible and find as many pictures as possible. I wish na dogs had one like some older and current euro lines do (dobermannpedigrees.nl) You can see pictures back for great x 6+ generations.
P.s. I think a thread about brandy's family deserves some brandy pics

Have you looked in to having the WVRC in Waukesha do a heart exam? |

| Ask and you shall receive!
I just gave this picture to our new vet. They have big boards up that they put their clients pictures on.
This one is from the pictures we had done in Sept. I love the way her lips are.
Tis the Season! She's checking out our mini tree!

ETA: Leading Edge was also the kennel name for another Thunder progeny that wound up in the BYB circles. its a damn shame | That's the understatement of the year!
Cheryl was actually THE breeder of Thunders litter--she GAVE Thunder, the pick male puppy to Soquel and the particulars of why the litter has Soquel as the kennel name was part of an arrangement with Soquel.
That pedigree is a pretty good example of how little control someone who breeds a litter has over subsequent generations. Cheryl always said that no one should double up on the dogs who produced Thunder and he never, ever should have been bred as extensively as he was.
You can have dogs who are bred and whose breeders have been producing top notch offspring for years and sell a puppy to someone who shows the dog then takes a finished male and breeds to bitches who probably should not have been bred in the first place.
It's also a great example of why the people who keep saying that you should be able to view both parents "on site" is not generally such a good idea at all--it's the quickest way to BYB breeding--breed your bitch to your dog and keep doing it.
Good breeders look all over the country for acceptable sires for their brood bitches.
I cringe everytime I look at some of these pedigrees--the albino pedigrees really make me sad. A very good breeder sold a male puppy to a man many years ago--he wanted it shown--the breeder showed and finished that dog and when after a long life the dog passed away he came back for another dog. Again the breeder showed and finished that dog and three or four years later someone contacted the breeder saying that the male was the sire of a bunch of puppies produced by an albino breeder. Those puppies ended up as the brood bitches and stud dogs for other albino breeders and the good breeder went back to the sires owner asking how on earth he had agreed to breed his nice dog to the bitch of a known albino breeder without even asking about doing so.
Seems that the person who came asking was a friend of a friend (the "friend" was the albino breeder)--the owner had no clue that this sort of thing could happen.
UGH--but it does, and it happens all the time...very sad but it does. |
