| Thanks. I have been doing my "homework". I had narrowed it down to a couple breeders, talked to them each on the phone, as well as trying to find out what I could in this forum, or google, about them too. It has helped. I've also been reading a ton of other posts about puppy biting, training, etc.... Getting ready.
I'm visiting one prospective puppy, next week, not to bring a puppy home, but just to meet the breeder, and her puppy/dogs. See if we are good match (the puppies personality and my family). Plus, it also gives me time to get my privacy fence finished . If this match doesn't work out, I'll wait till spring. But if it does, I'll definitely post pictures in a few weeks. |

I've been looking since October for breeders expecting litters this month and next, and even though its been a long search I know in the end it will be worth it! And kudos for not giving in to BYBs, the Midwest is definitely rampant with those. Good luck!! Sent from my iPhone using Petguide.com Free App | You are so right! I did notice that there seemed to be a lot of "backyard breeders". Is the Midwest, the puppy mill area?
I could have gotten a puppy from someone, only 5 miles from my town; however, I didn't feel that was the Doberman for me..... They didn't really have good history, health on the parents, etc. It seemed more like just decided to have a litter because they were "cute"? or little extra cash? Not sure. I have seen some of those Dobermans around town, but for some reason, seeing them, did not change my mind about not wanting a puppy from them. Since, I don't know a lot about Dobermans at this point, I guess, it's a gut feeling? This is a huge commitment, and if I have to wait months longer, to find the right puppy, I can wait.
Good luck on your search too! This forum has given me several breeders to look into. I'm actually, going to meet with a breeder and her puppy later next week. It's not a taking the puppy home visit. It's a visit for us to meet and see if she (the breeder) feels my family and I are a good match for her puppy. If not, I'm okay with that too, as I feel that's a more responsible way (trying to match the puppies personality with the right family vs just making money to anyone wanting to buy the puppy).
I'll let everyone know, after I know, lol, if I will have new puppy going my family soon. |

| Oh, I also wanted to add..... My husband says this is my mid-life crisis (adding a Doberman) since we are now down to only 1 child left at home, and she's in High school. I said, yes, probably, but it's cheaper than a sports car. He said, well that's a toss up, if you add in the cost of the puppy and the new privacy fence (we have a pretty big backyard). I said, well, if you'd have a mid-life crisis, for a pool, then we'd be set. He's a great sport! |

| We're on the other end of the spectrum, my SO and I have been together almost 5 years and want to raise a puppy together as parents, and then in a few years have a human baby. I have seen how loving and protective dobermans can be with babies and small children, and I look forward to us all growing up as a family. My SO has also given me a lot of trouble about how much time I've spent researching the breed and different breeders, we as well had one fairly close offering puppies for sale for $600 with made-up bloodlines. Doing a little more digging led me to older posts from the same person: 3-4 litters a year from the same set of parents... No thanks. Especially with all of the health problems dobes can get, I want to make sure I have the best chance of a healthy, sound family dog. Hope the visit next week goes well, and can't wait to hear more when you find your new baby! Sent from my iPhone using Petguide.com Free App |

| I know of a few different littlers, in Ohio there is some puppies out of Hollywood's Race the Sun aka Trace and also I think Bel-mar in Michigan has a few. You can sent me a message on here and I can forward contact info for the breeders.

| update: I will be bringing a black female puppy home in next Saturday. She's from the litter in Ohio that some of you mentioned to me. Visited with the breeder last night (for about 2 hrs). No name picked out yet. My daughters (ages 15 and 20) want something that starts with a "Z". Suggestions welcome She's bundle of energy, which is perfect for my family as we are very active. 3 of us are joggers in half marathons. Of course, long way to go before jogging so I don't damage her growth plates.
here's her parents:
Champion Sired by CH Holly Woods Race The Sun "Trace" X Camee's Don't Ya Tell V Briarwood, "Nakita", CGC, 13 pts/1 major
No pictures yet. Cell too slow, couldn't capture her quick enough; little ball of energy. When she's home, I'll use my camera and then post some. |

Based on Carol's assessment of her personality (and some other breeders/judges who evaluated her liter), the puppy would be great for obedience/agility activities. So I'm working on setting up some private lessons (till she's old enough next month for group lessons) so get her started. The instructor has competed in competitive obedience and rally, has a therapy dog, and serves as a CGC evaluator for AKC. This should get me started off on the right track with my new ball of energy.
Will post pictures when the puppy joins our new home, using my camera. And hopefully, we'll have a name by then, lol |

| My cousin has a Yorkie named Zenyatta that they call Zennie for short and I always felt that this name would be great for a Doberman. Love old race horse's names.

Are you getting one of the boys? The other one, I know is going to a family with kids (ages 6 and 10, I think). The calmer boy will work better for them, and the "energize bunny" girl will work great with my family as we are very active (run half marathons). Already have a trainer set up for a lesson, the day after Christmas, to get a good start on manners. The trainer does agility, rally, etc... so that's something to work towards too. Gotta keep the little gals mind busy |

| I had talked to her back in early October over the phone, since then I got super busy with work and vacation/holiday planning, and was looking for breeders closer to home. I just sent her an email earlier today and will call her as soon as I get off of work. Its about a 4-5 hour drive for me, but it would definitely be worth it. Crossing my fingers that he is still available! Thanks so much for the info! Good idea with getting a private trainer for her, she sounds like she'll make an excellent running partner! I run a little, like 2-3 miles at a time, but do lots of outdoor stuff like camping/hiking/floating/fishing, and I hope that by starting out early and in the wintertime, I'll have a well-trained adventure buddy by spring : ) Maybe I'll see you and your girl at a dog-friendly 5K in St Louis sometime in the future? I think half-marathon is a bit too ambitious for me ; ) |

That's how I found mine. No matter what your activity, the dogs will love it!
I didn't even know dog-friendly 5Ks existed. That's so exciting and great thing to look forward to. St Louis is only 1.5 hrs away, so easy enough. Won't be running for a little while though till her growth plates are closed. Read around 18 months, or can get an X-ray to check earlier. I'll find plenty of things to do with her before then, plus it will give me plenty of time to have her heeling refined.
Let us know if you get one and good luck! |

| Ok, we've picked a name.... my daughters couldn't agree on a "Z" name. They each liked different ones, but somehow both liked Harley. So Harley is going to be her name. Like a new baby, they are now announcing the name to all their friends. |
