In defence of working breeders (and I don't know which one is being referred to here, but I can guess)...even the mellowest pup from some of the old lines is a lot more dog than most "just a pet" homes would want to deal with.

Not everyone enjoys the joys of the exhuberance and energy of the working line drives....or their interior decorating skills if you don't keep them distracted 24/7.
... Whilst I think a pup using furniture as hurdles and trampolines is cute....most people have clasified me as "MAD". I will admit though, that these dogs ARE exhausting. Their batteries do not run down like other dogs, at least not for several years. (...and even then...)
Whilst they can make great pets (for those of us mad enough), they are not what any sane person would look for in a "just a pet"

Oh I agree with you totally. However, although they need a particular home, it does not mean they have to be working in schutzhund. That's my main point. If someone wants a mellow couch potato or a dog who just requires a leisurely walk around the neighborhood, then yeah, I'd probably tell them to look elsewhere too!

And also, this particular breeder is not breeding 'those old lines' that require that. They are breeding some fairly popular lines that have many many pets nowadays. It seems in the past, this may not have been the case though.

I've seen many good working line breeders in the US sell puppies to pet homes, so I don't think that's a simply a given.

Amen, I live with an Ascomanis Gero son, and just had to settle his acrobatics around the living room. Sad is that he has a pug companion and she now mimics his behaviors... in her own way. Where he ramps up, races at the sliding glass door and pogo jumps 8' high... the pug runs at the door and bounces her face off the screened portion.

I totally understand the high drive that working dogs may have and they may have personalities that make them more suitable to a higher energy level activity.. but they didnt have to say that anything else was of "poor quality"
Im not saying working breeders are all asshats, but this breeder could have handled it a lot more gracefully.

The bolded was the problem for me, although it was supposed to be their past clients and not them themselves. To their benefit, when I emailed that breeder their response was nothing but kind and polite. Still, if that's how their cliental act, I was too irritated to want anything to do with it, so I ended up scratching their name off my list.

And let's not forget, schutzhund was actually an interest of mine. Along with other sporty things, I did want to do work. I fully intend on getting Skoll up to the level of BH, if possible.

you have no idea how much I giggled and reading that.

Basil occasionaly faceplants the door in zoomies too....as well as misjudging his leaps onto chairs and faceplanting into them instead.
...and I laugh uproariously at him too!

It's just ridiculous! The dobe does a similar race to the door frame and tags it like a basketball player running floor drills, and I think that's where she got it.

I just couldn't believe when I approached the door to let them in, watching as the Dobe jumped up above my head... when I heard "thud". Looked to my left, at the other side where the screen door was pulled back, and there was the loaf-of-bread-masquerading-as-a-dog, bouncing off the screen door. It's funniest b/c she thinks she's as tough as he is, demand-barking that I let her in, damnit. Meanwhile, I just watched her bonk off the door....

She's done it at least 3 times this week. I question her brain scramble at this point.

Awww, that's sweet that you knew that..lol. Yes it was her birthday yesterday, she spent the morning at the vet! Not much of a present, but she did get a nice big knuckle bone when she got home.

I purchased my first two Dobermans from a breeder whose dogs were vetted regularly as were her pups with tails, worming and first vaccinations done by the vet. His name was given to me so I could inquire about her dogs and their care if I desired. She had proof of longevity in her lines and showed it to me. I met every dog on her premises. The ears were not cropped but I was given the name of a veterinarian and I had them done. Both of these dogs had less health and temperamental problems than two dogs I purchased from a highly regarded reputable breeder. There are no guarantees in life. I am sure many would consider the breeder of my first dogs a backyard breeder. She did not breed more than one litter every two years and she does not breed at all today. She called herself a hobby breeder. So what makes the difference or are they the same thing?

I posted this in another thread. It is from a boxer forum, but they have similar health problems to dobes. Give a read through and see if you can answer your own question perhaps.

ETA: Disclaimer - I didn't create this chart, it's not mine. It's certainly not one size fits all, and some breeders may overlap or span multiple category types, but I think it provides a good breakdown of the different types of breeders and general characteristics of each.
