I guess that is true, what everyone wants will be different.

Dillon was easy going and also very focused on whatever we were doing. If I wanted to relax he would relax along with me. I guess that's why I'd like to stick to the show lines. I think a working line dog might be more than I'd want to handle. I just want a buddy to do things with and to keep me company.

You have time. I'd be having conversations with breeders of dogs that at least appear to have what I want.

I'm pretty amazed at how much breeders tend to know about various dogs in various pedigrees.

I'm still sorry you have a need to be shopping. Dillon was a fave of mine.

This is so very true....Petey and Monty's protectiveness were on the opposite ends of the spectrum, although they shared a similar pedigree. Monty is so much more of a mellow and very easy going boy, Petey was much more intense, he was a live wire. Monty is much easier to live with day to day. I think Petey was more like a working lines Dobe although he came from euro show lines. Monty needs very little exercise or attention and is always good in the house since he was a little puppy. Petey was forever testing me if he was bored.

You need to find a breeder you trust and like, one who will be there for the life of the dog. If I email my breeder about something....she calls me with in a day or so, its a good feeling knowing they are out there to help with anything, not like if you buy from another country and there is also a language barrier. There is no reason you can't find a pedigree you want in the US or Canada....and the parents will be health tested. I know that isn't a guarantee but it certainly stacks the odds in your favor a little bit.

I too feel deeply sorry that you have to search for a new buddy. I thinks its good though...having a new boy to love and spend time with will help heal your heart and give you someone new to take your mind off your grief.

Thanks for the recommendation you PM'd me about. I've got a few other recommendations today so I think I might keep my search to North America.

I'm glad I started this thread as so many have reminded me that I will never recreate Dillon, and I don't need to. My thought was that buying from his lines would get me another small piece of him, but it won't be him.

I hope to narrow it down to 2 or 3 breeders and go with whoever has a litter when I am ready in Spring 2014. It's tough to wait, but in a way it's good that I have the time to do a lot of research and make a wise decision.

Thanks again to everyone for the comments and kind words. It helps a lot.

I guess I'm not sure why temperament is an unknown in the lines you are looking at? It's a little harder to research for sure, but I think you can research temperament trends in the pedigrees you are looking at. I think with a good breeder you can be matched with a puppy who is likely to have the type of temperament you want.

Not unknown just unknown to me personally as I have never met any of their dogs. I'm sure I can get what I want from them if I go that way.

No matter how much health testing a breeder does we always face a risk.
Unfortunately we can not buy a longevity.

A reactive or hyper dog may make your life miserable.
Correct if I am wrong... Dillon was:
-easy to train
-eager to please
-great focus
-calm and well-balanced
-protective and loyal
-independent

It's so important to find the right dog. Temperament is always #1 for me.
You won't have another Dillon if you buy from Ramon or Zedor but your chance to have a good dog is much higher.

Much higher than what?

Paul, I feel how much you miss Dillon. When I lost EmilyB I thought my life was over. She did so much for me in a lot of ways I couldn't begin to describe.

As RFR said, each doberman has something else to offer. So similar they are, and yet so different.

My only question to you is, how can you possibly wait that long.....!!!!!

It's hard to wait but I've got too much going on this Winter and Spring that I won't have the time I need to devote to a new pup.

Not necessarily bad, why would you think so? I've never owned a rescue dobe (three now) - (eta all females) that have had problems with small dogs.

PM me if you want to pursue it. You can come visit multiple dobes at a breeder/rescue on a Sunday afternoon just to get a fix if you'd like.

Also, Deb Romans always needs help with fostering, she is constantly inundated, and mostly the dogs are good ones!

My small dogs can be snippy. Dillon just ignored them like they were insects. I'm not sure what another adult dog would do. It's sort of what's kept me from getting another adult as I really don't enjoy the puppy stuff all that much.

I'll keep that in mind. Maybe the right dog would be okay. When I'm not so busy maybe we could set something up. I'd like to help out if I could.

That's a great idea to go and meet Deb's dogs. It's even better to foster one of them. You will learn more about different Doberman personalities. Definitely it will help you to make a right decision.

Just to clarify, Deb Romans is in Tofield up by Edmonton. She is most active in rescue.

The breeder I visit for grooming is Susan Hughes/Witness Dobermans. Sunday is nails/posting/whatever day, and is guaranteed for a multitude of breeds/sizes/and of course, dobermans-a-plenty.

Please make sure you're not wishing-hoping-praying the new pup will walk exactly in those same pawsteps.

Most all Dobermans are awesome, even those rescues of unknown lineage. If you have a chance to try for more longevity and better health...I'd be tempted to go for that.

The new puppy will have a different personality--it will be a different relationship with you--and a different experience, a different bond. There will be new and different lessons, and one day you will realize you wouldn't have missed THIS new bond, for the world, even though you still/always miss Dillon like crazy.
This is so true! After just losing my boy at 5 to DCM my breeder promised me another puppy... I wanted a boy, but only girls were born-I was a little disappointed at first, then I realized I was looking at my new potential pup to be a cookie cutter of Cooper, then I began to worry that the new pup would not be enough like Cooper (his stellar temperment and awesome personality). It is unfair to have preset expectations of a pup... this is setting them up to fail, basue they will be differnt--but in their own way!
The reason why I am going with the same breeder (besides the fact that this pup is from different lines) is the amount of breeder support provided and compassion shown during our difficult times. I feel if you can find a breeder that is more local you may recieve better breeder support, and you may have the opportunity to meet the pups and the dam before you even bring the pup home. Go meet the breeder, feel them out, and get an idea of what their priorities are. I, for one, would go after a pup that had health and longesvity on its side, beause if it is coming from a decent breeder, temperment will also likely be there as well--these people have to live with their dogs, unlike greeders who often kennel and tie their dogs.
It is very stressful finding a pup after you have lost a special friend. But it is part of the healing process. I wish you luck in your decision, and I know no matter what, you will be happy with your choice!

I'm of the opinion that it's smart to wait. When I lost my last boy I waited 18 months before I got my current dog. Waiting gave me plenty of time to make a well thought out informed decision, and kept me from buying a dog from a number of people that I am extremely glad I did not do business with. It also took me quite some time to grieve and I needed that to run it's course.

If I were in your shoes I would keep my options open, there are a number of dogs in the Baron/Fedor line that died rather young. Borana Sawages (Nike's mom) died fairly young, as well as a number of dogs on Fedor's mother line. I would do some research and draw your own conclusions:

Fedor del Nasi - working-dog.eu

My trainers dog is a Nike/Fedor line dog and he is anything but mellow, so I wouldn't count on another companion from that line giving you a calm temperament. All that being said I'm not trying to discourage you from going the same direction again, but urge you to look at all the angles. That being said there are lots of great lines out there and I wish you luck on your exciting search!

This thread made me cry. Many years ago I had Heidi,I thought I would never get over losing her.I went many years without a dobe (30) .Back in 2000ish I was again looking.A Canadian breeder who I don't even remember the name Sent me a wonderful heartfelt email, He told me to stop looking for Heidi and to find one I could love. I found Baron who will be 11 tomorrow. He is from a BYB the family that had him was going overseas and could not take him. Does Heidi will stay in my heart? you bet, does my heart still tug when I look at picture of her ? you bet .But Baron and the 2 more dobies I have I could not love more. The joy of having them is so everything to me .Hold your memories close,Find you a another one to help heal your heart. There will never be another Dillon.

Female Dobes (especially Red) have a way of wrapping their Dad around their paw in short order.[/quote]

That is so true! That is what has been keeping me from getting another dobe, especially a red bitch! Megan was my novice A dog and came into my life when I needed her most, and I won't get a red bitch because of it, I would compare too much. I am starting my search for the right dog and I will know her when I meet her, and with a little luck she will be fawn or blue!

I'm the type of guy that always goes for health and the right temperament, regardless of breed. Having said that, you will know the right dog when it comes along. I know you loved your pup very much, but do your research on all breedings that you are interested in regardless of breeder and then make your choice after you have met the pups. Just be open!
