| Warning about Shavings We have used shavings for our pups and in ten years, no problems. However, last week a perfectly healthy 6 week old puppy suffocated and the cause was a shaving. We suspected that, did p.m. to confirm and now have confirmation.
I'm sure this is a fluke, never to happen again but I know I won't ever use shavings again. Back to paper we go ....
I thought I should share the info.....for anyone who is using shavings as I'd hate to see anyone go through this loss for something so preventable.
RIP little green collar girl .... :-(

| Aw, I'm so sorry to hear that! Poor thing! Did she have a home all picked out already? You wouldn't think at that age that a shaving would cause so much harm. Never thought about it, but I guess paper would be safer and degradable.

I was shocked when i saw the shavings piece. :-(

| So sorry for your loss, it's unfortunate when it a small soul has to loose a life for some unsafe issues.
My boss as well as a breeder friend went through the same thing but one lost a whole litter of 8 years ago, the other two pups, they're on full sheets of newspaper till 8 weeks now or on a tarp with an expen around them and a heating lamp.

| I'm so sorry for your loss, poor little girl.
One of my breeders uses washable pee pads. Lots of laundry, but easy to clean up and doesn't smell like wet newspaper does. She has used newspaper in the past, but likes pee pads better. Just in case you interested in something else. |

| I use to use shaving too. I had a bad experience back in 91 the last time I did the shavings.
Shavings work so nicely. They soak up the mess and you just replace them once a day.
But I had a puppy bitch get some into her eye. She almost lost the eye since its abrasive. I had her eye washed out by the vet and we were not sure what would be the outcome. We got lucky and she was alright.
Anyway, ever since then I went back to the "newsprint." I buy it at the storage locker places. It is newspaper without the print...costly...$20.00 a bindle. And, you will be lucky to use only 2 bindles in a week.
The newspaper is awful. It is messy. I hate it. But it is safe.
I am such a freak about saftey issues, I do not put any collars of any sort on my puppies. I can tell each one apart. They are the same in markings. But you can tell right from the start who's who...at least I can.
So I do not do collars of any type...what a hanging, catching up, issue to me. I won't do it to my puppies.
I put them on only for others to be able to tell them apart when its time for their homes. After that...no collars. Heck my puppies, I kept, right now at 8 months old, do not wear collars. They are running on major property; and, I'd hate for them to get caught up on something. |

| Dobes71, I'm not sure why you commented on their markers/collars - I think it's perfectly fine to use collars, regardless of how well you know one pup from the other. That said, the idea of using newsprint is a good one.

vomKobyHaus.com | The pup was almost 6 weeks old. I don't use shavings until about 4 weeks, when we move them to the new puppy pen. Some people have said they don't use shavings at all until they are six weeks or so, but in this case I really think it was a complete fluke, but enough to make me never use them again.

I don't mind the velcro Pupcollars when they are little but I worry....plus the pups are microchipped and so if there's a doubt i can scan them LOL
the newspaper has not been as bad as i thought...i'm surprised and as an added bonus I am the proud owner of about 8 2013 Milk Calendars LOL
