My Dobie Indy will be 10 in April and I think it's time to start my search for a puppy. I have done rescue twice and loved both dogs to their dying day, but I admit I'm afraid to do it again because I lost them to health related issues. I realize that buying a quality puppy was no guarantee of health and longevity, for me it was the right choice because Indy has been healthy and outlived his predecessors by several years. Indy has been a fabulous companion and I hope we will have years together but I think it would be best to have him help me raise the next dog. I have never had two dobies at the same time. What would be the issues I should consider? Indy is sensitive, gets along with all other animals and is a great ambassador for his breed. One of the reasons he is such a great dog is he was influenced by an older dog (lab mix) who was a wise gentleman whom he greatly admired. I would hope he could serve as the same example for a youngster. I will be looking for a puppy with similar bred-for-longevity and disposition. I'd appreciate any leads.

If you are happy with your Indy can you not go back to the same breeder?

You have your pick of any number of good breeders in this area. There are quite a few shows coming up in Vancouver and Portland that I would recommend attending and seeing and meeting all of the local dobermans/breeders in person.

Going back to Indy's breeder is an excellent suggestion. I was just hoping for something closer to home. Indy came from Virginia. His breeder was Sharon Hildebrand. She had the puppies that were bound for west coast homes transported by a trusted friend across country to a fantastic home in Tahoe, where I drove down to pick him up. I worry that it isn't a puppy that I want but another Indy. Does that make sense? It wouldn't be fair to the puppy.

I will eagerly attend the dog shows in Portland. I did that prior to adopting my second dog to see if this truly was the breed for me. It was informative but owners and handlers seemed too preoccupied to talk. So I tried to just watch and absorb all I could. That was many years ago though...

I know of a litter being planned in Idaho with similar lines of Indy from the one side.

wow, really? I would love to learn more! there are times when I think I'd walk to Idaho to get another dog like Indy (or at least ride one of the horses...)

Oregon? Foxfire! She bred my girl, and she's fantastic. Very wonderful person with incredibly well-socialized dogs. Others on the board also have dogs by her and give a strong recommendation. She does have a waitlist, but that's typically for very good reason - her dogs are absolutely fantastic.

That said, I recommend meeting with Julie W. I'm sure she can introduce you to other breeders.

Edit: In fact, it looks like she has a 2 y/o male available for a home right now. Says on her site that it's available for a meet n greet to people on West Coast. Says he's low key, but most of the dogs I've met from her have been more "drive"-y (I know my girl has a very high drive), so it could be a great match. If not, just tell her what you want and I'm sure she can figure something out. Email is the best way to contact her.

This is all very preliminary right now, with health testing pending, but the sire hopeful is a son of Arlo's (Jesaran's Brothers In Arms) half sister. The pedigree is full of great longevity. PM if you want more info.
