Puppy quest in Oregon

My Dobie Indy will be 10 in April and I think it's time to start my search for a puppy. I have done rescue twice and loved both dogs to their dying day, but I admit I'm afraid to do it again because I lost them to health related issues. I realize that buying a quality puppy was no guarantee of health and longevity, for me it was the right choice because Indy has been healthy and outlived his predecessors by several years. Indy has been a fabulous companion and I hope we will have years together but I think it would be best to have him help me raise the next dog. I have never had two dobies at the same time. What would be the issues I should consider? Indy is sensitive, gets along with all other animals and is a great ambassador for his breed. One of the reasons he is such a great dog is he was influenced by an older dog (lab mix) who was a wise gentleman whom he greatly admired. I would hope he could serve as the same example for a youngster. I will be looking for a puppy with similar bred-for-longevity and disposition. I'd appreciate any leads.

If you are happy with your Indy can you not go back to the same breeder?

Foxfire is in Oregon and Michelle is highly recommended. You will find her if you google foxfire dobermans. Also check out the DPCA breeder listings for breeders in your State.

Welcome to DT and hugs to your senior boy, he's gorgeous!

You have your pick of any number of good breeders in this area. There are quite a few shows coming up in Vancouver and Portland that I would recommend attending and seeing and meeting all of the local dobermans/breeders in person.

Indy

Going back to Indy's breeder is an excellent suggestion. I was just hoping for something closer to home. Indy came from Virginia. His breeder was Sharon Hildebrand. She had the puppies that were bound for west coast homes transported by a trusted friend across country to a fantastic home in Tahoe, where I drove down to pick him up. I worry that it isn't a puppy that I want but another Indy. Does that make sense? It wouldn't be fair to the puppy.

I will eagerly attend the dog shows in Portland. I did that prior to adopting my second dog to see if this truly was the breed for me. It was informative but owners and handlers seemed too preoccupied to talk. So I tried to just watch and absorb all I could. That was many years ago though...

Indy is: Tinker's In Dire Straits #WS03327006
sired by Jesaran's Brothers in Arms WP98746601 03-2
out of Bellnhans in the Footlights WP86709701 06-03 OFA46E

Sorry if I didn't phrase that right and I'm not sure what the numbers/Letters mean but I swear to learn as I trot off to do pedigree research. I have print outs of the pedigree for both parents.

If you go ask around ringside for me (Julie Ward). I will most likely be the one with a ginormous camera in front of my face. Just walk up and introduce yourself, doesn't matter what I'm doing, you won't be interrupting me at all. I will be happy to introduce you to people.

I know of a litter being planned in Idaho with similar lines of Indy from the one side.

Oregon? Foxfire! She bred my girl, and she's fantastic. Very wonderful person with incredibly well-socialized dogs. Others on the board also have dogs by her and give a strong recommendation. She does have a waitlist, but that's typically for very good reason - her dogs are absolutely fantastic.

That said, I recommend meeting with Julie W. I'm sure she can introduce you to other breeders.

Edit: In fact, it looks like she has a 2 y/o male available for a home right now. Says on her site that it's available for a meet n greet to people on West Coast. Says he's low key, but most of the dogs I've met from her have been more "drive"-y (I know my girl has a very high drive), so it could be a great match. If not, just tell her what you want and I'm sure she can figure something out. Email is the best way to contact her.

This is all very preliminary right now, with health testing pending, but the sire hopeful is a son of Arlo's (Jesaran's Brothers In Arms) half sister. The pedigree is full of great longevity. PM if you want more info.

Puppy Quest begins anew

I know this is an old thread now, but I feel compelled to add that I lost Indy the day before Thanksgiving. He suddenly developed paralysis from a possible disc rupture in his neck. I rushed him to a specialist but after hearing all the options and even the most hopeful of outcomes (among the worst) I made the decsion to put him to sleep. Indy would have been 11 this April. I sent away for his BL certificate just in case his pedigree would be of use to someone researching his lines. I regret waiting to get a puppy for him to teach. My quest for a quality BFL puppy begins again in earnest. But I get the sense it will be a long and difficult process.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I know there are a few good breeders up in the OR, WA area and I'm having a brainless moment. I can only think of Foxfire and Starlaine. But I know there are more. I think Cathy Ceely is in that area - ah she's Emerald Dobermans. Also Sherluck and Wynbdem

Thank you for caring about longevity. I keep hoping that the more informed buyers are - breeding with longevity in mind will become trendier than studs du jour.

My condolences to you on the loss of Indy.

Hi Taerie,

I'm awfully sorry to hear your lost Indy--I lost a Dobe to a herniated disc which ruptured and left him paralyzed and made the same decision for my dog that you made for Indy.

Just wanted to tell you that this Saturday and Sunday the Clark County Kennel Club shows are at the Clark County Fairgrounds in their new building. Dobes show at 8:00 am after about 1/2 hour of judging a different breed on both days. I'll be there on Saturday and Michelle Santana is supposed to be there as well--I'll have a puppy who is going on 5 months who Michelle bred at the show for her to see. I won't bring him in until after the judging but if you can find Julie she can point you at me. Or ask--my name is Bug and most of the Dobe folk know me.

You can meet a Foxfire puppy (and if it wasn't supposed to be really cold I'd bring his father along--he's another Foxfire Dobe and nice and social--Julie knows him too--his name is Toad) (definitely not a commentary on his looks).

I'm so sorry to hear about Indy. Sincere condolences.

If you are able to go to the show DobeBug mentions above, that would be a great opportunity for you to meet some Doberman folks. Best wishes to you.

I am so sorry for your loss - making the decision to end his suffering couldn't have been easy. I'm sure he knows that you made your decision with his well being in mind and he'll definitely be waiting for you at the bridge.

Sleep softly, Indy.

I'm very sorry for your loss of Indie. Please accept my condolences for your loss.

I know your down, but try to take Bug up on her offer. It's a complement to Indie that you're wanting another doberman. Means he was a really good boy that you want another of his breed.

I totally get where you are coming from. Been there. Its taken me a long time to get back to a place where I am comfortable, hell eager!! to let another dobe into my heart/life. Ive been blessed to have a heart dobe already, never thought I would be able to let another dobe in. Like you, I didnt think it would be fair on the pup. But the one thing I have learned, and it took me a LONG LONG time...is that in time the overwhelming pain and grief subsides to one of acceptance. I will never forget Zak, miss him always...but am now eagerly looking forward to a little doberboy joining our household...hoping, praying that I will find in Thor the companionship and joy I found in Zak. I wish you the same, am soooo sorry for your loss.

Hi Taerie... so sorry for your loss of Indy... that is very sad, and must have been a very tough decision for you to make. Not that any dog would ever take his place in your heart, but I hope that soon enough, another Doberman youngster will enter your life who will bring you much joy and comfort.

I'm a little bit envious... I want to go to the show and meet Julie and Bug!

I'm so sorry for your loss Taerie. Words are never enough when you lose a piece of your heart... I wish you luck in finding a puppy to help fill a little of that hole I'm sure Indy has left.

I know some already mentioned Foxfire, Starlaine, and Emerald. But I didn't see Sunset Dobermans on there, I have heard good things about Dawn Danner, she is in the Portland area. Cathy Ceely (Emerald) was also very nice, and helpful when I was searching last winter, although I ended up choosing a pup with some nice agility breeding from Paula Ratoza in the end (well, will bring him home next week--it has been a long wait!). Cathy didn't have any pups, but she may be planning another litter by now, or know of someone who is. I have been told her males have exquisite temperaments

Good luck in your search, I hope you are able to find something within a suitable time frame!

Thank you

I am so moved by all the condolences! Wow...
Indy was such a wonderful companion. I'm just now beginning to accept that he's really gone. I keep picking up dog toys and I just can't throw them out. This cabin seems so empty. For the first time in 20 years I am without a pet. Though I have a horse or two that would think it's perfectly acceptable to move in.
I really want to go to the show! But it's 18 degrees here this morning and the commute from these mountains to civilization is going to be completely terrifying! lol If I do make it to the show, you can find me easily, I'll be the one in tears. I thought I'd get older and tougher in my fifties but alas that seems to be completely untrue.

So sorry for your loss. When you're up to it maybe you could share some pictures of Indy in the Rainbow Bridge section.

My Richter is sired by a Jesaran dog, like your Indy was.
