| Looking for reputable breeders in and around Virginia As the title says, I'm looking for a breeder in my area, as my most trusted breeder is no longer breeding.
I prefer a breeder that can provide strong, healthy, intelligent and genetically sound pups, as my last two pups succumb way to soon to congenital health problems. One at 5 due to a congenital heart problem and my most recent to cancer at 9. Boo passed two days ago and I'm ate up over it. I NEED a new pup.
While the title says in and around Virginia, I have no problems with traveling out of state as far as the mid-west to pick up my new pup from a breeder that can provide the "perfect" combination of health, fitness and intelligence and genetic viability. Although, the closer to home the better. West coast breeders are out of the question, as I don't feel right about shipping pups, and traveling cross country adds a great deal to an already expensive purchase. Even though I feel it's worth it, I just can't afford to travel past the mid-west states. Plus I don't really feel comfortable with a purchase from a breeder who is willing to ship me a pup cross country. I want a meet and greet, see the dogs in their home environment, and be able to look the breeder in the eye, so we both know what we're getting. It's not like this is a one way street.
I don't plan to show or sports train, and will obedience train myself. I'm looking for a family pet that will work to protect his family, but not be overly protective, unless need be. Small children isn't an issue. I don't really have a preference in breed, be it Euro, American or hybridized, although I do tend to lean towards male Euros. My main concern is loyalty, longevity of life, and avoiding the heartbreak of my last two pups. I do prefer males over females, and black and tans, but that's not carved in stone. I've had a couple of great reds in past years
I have looked at the breeder page, but I have no idea where any of those breeders are located, or how well we suit each others needs. So if y'all can help point me in the right direction, and narrow things down a lil, I'll greatly appreciate it. If I left anything out, please forgive me, I'm pretty distraught at the moment Thanks y'all

I live in the Hampton Roads area. but like I said above I don't mind traveling. I'll forgo closeness to breeder for the security of the greatest chance at avoiding health concerns.
BTW I should mention that I have big yard with a wooded area in the back corner and 6ft privacy fence so I have plenty space for exercise.

| If you are looking for more Euro type, check these breeders out: UDC Breeder Referral
More NA showline: DPCA Breeder Referral
Both of these lists have breeders that I would personally not be interested in, so research each breeder and choose who you feel most comfortable with.
Also, don't hesitate to ask questions here about particular breeders. Chances are that members have experience with a lot of these breeders and can provide further insight. The search function here is helpful as well.

| I am so sorry for your loss. I just want to say that no breeder can guarantee you won't lose a dog to Cardio or Cancer and any breeder that does - you should run from. I believe the average life expectancy for Dobes is around 9 years of age. Obviously some live longer and some don't live that long.
I wish you the best of luck with your puppy search and look forward to seeing the results.

Thank you, it's very painful for sure. I understand that 100% certainty is out of the question, and I do agree that if someone is claiming that, it's best to high tail it out of there. Looking back at my original post I can see that I was definitely grieving, and reaching a bit.
However, I am looking for the best possible odds in that area. I've had two dobies that lived a lot longer than average. One, a male that almost made it to 13 years, and a female that was over 16 when she passed. These dogs are clearly exceptions I know, and if I could, I would go to their breeders, but that's not possible as Sue Clem has since passed, and I never had papers on Ladybug as she was rescue case.
I do have a question about Desta Dobermans and Dayna Hewitt, as my brother built a deck for her last year. Does anyone here have any experience with Desta? I didn't see them on the lists provided RottenVonSpotten.

She is a great person, and stands behind her dogs, She has been breeding for many years. Let me know if I can answer any questions for you. |

| Thanks, y'all, I'm heading out of town for a week in a few days, and will give Dayna a call when I return and see what we can set up. I really appreciate y'all's help. It really means a lot to me at this time. Thanks |

Do some research - learn what the issues are with this breed's health and research breeders. If you are considering a Blue or a Fawn, please educate yourself on CDA. Regardless of what Harraden or anybody else tells you, the fact is that there are NO lines free of DCM, not in the U.S., Europe, South America or Timbuktu.... Find another breeder, you will be glad you did.
There are several good breeders in your area. Start a new thread and start asking questions. People here will be happy to assist you.

| Sorry I was gone from this thread for so long. I just had to chill a bit. I couldn't come here or even think about Boo without falling apart. It still hurts, but I can write this post without crying. I've pretty much settled on Desta after talking to Dayna. She's going to be mating her champion Chance after the first of the year with female of a friend if everything works out. she's also going to be breeding her female, but I'm leaning more towards chance's pups. As my Brother has a female pup from the same female.
I want to thank y'all for the kind words to my loss, and help in finding a new breeder |
